COOPERSTOWN, NY — Despite not yet being officially elected to the prestigious and exclusive group, one late baseball player already landed a lucrative sponsorship, as it was announced that Pete Rose's Hall of Fame induction ceremony would be brought to you by DraftKings.
The long-awaited election of Major League Baseball's all-time hit leader to the Hall of Fame had not even taken place when the online sports betting website snapped up the rights to promote the event.
"It's our honor to sponsor such a special occasion," said DraftKings CEO and co-founder Jason Robins. "We're currently taking bets on how many minutes the induction speech someone will give on Pete's behalf will run. Head to DraftKings now to get in on the action!"
Despite keeping Rose on the "permanently ineligible" list for Hall of Fame consideration until his death, Major League Baseball agreed to allow the sponsorship. "It just fits the occasion too perfectly," said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. "This allows Pete Rose to finally be enshrined in the Hall of Fame while depriving him of enjoying the experience, and benefits Major League Baseball financially. It's a win-win."
At publishing time, reports circulated that Pete Rose's family had made a small fortune by winning a bet that the ban on his election to the Hall of Fame would be lifted.
I still don’t think he’ll be in the HOF anytime soon.
OK, now that’s funny.
They got it wrong; it’s FanDuel.
Tomorrow’s headlines today! 🫠
The first time I saw Only Fans in a news headline I thought it was sports betting or fantasy league. LOL
I think he’ll make it in. The HOF changed its rules specifically to keep him out because they thought if he were put to a vote he would get in. If anything I think there is less anti-Rose sentiment now than in 1991.
Trump is going to make it happen
The secondary sponsor is the Choctaw Spa and Casino
Dr. Naivete here thought it was a fan store...
FWIW, both Alex Karras and Paul Hornung were both busted for betting on NFL games and were suspended for that season and returned the next year. Both are in the NFL Hall of Fame
Heck — I think it’s only a matter of time before most major North American sports leagues are rocked by gambling scandals anyway.
This could VERY EASILY be a real story !
Especially because he only bet on his own team to win. Not like he threw the games, like the White Sox players (but not Shoeless Joe Jackson, who performed well in that Series)
The Bee spares no one, living or dead.
2028 is the soonest possible
I assume you went back to check to make sure many times.
Big donation to the Hall?
Betting on his own team to win as no better than betting against it. You play to win the game, not win money. You cannot have equal dual motives; one motive will suffer. It corrupts the game.
What’s the matter with you?
I never went to the site. LOL When I read past the headline I realized what it was. I think it was in the news for women wanting to sue the site for not making them as much money as when a rapper celebrity did porn on it (and her fans gave tons of money to see her do porn).
