Woodline of forest near where attack took place.
The evidence showed the man was killed hours before the 7 a.m. call. Sunrise was still an hour away.
“a bear had killed Markel’s dog as the relative had watched”. Watching the bear kill the dog? How about doing something? I would not be in an area unarmed with bears, pythons, gators, and everything else that wants to eat me. I’d have a gun capable of taking out the worst. Apparently the bear got away, no telling if it was rabid or not. Rare for a bear to attack unless you get too close to its cubs or it’s starving or rabid. I would think there is plenty of food for a bear in the everglades.
Old person in 80’s should be living only in a city or town, not in wilderness area.

New York Post reported: “Robert Markel’s granddaughter called 911 on the morning of May 5, after seeing a 263-pound bear killing her dad’s dog right outside his camper, situated on...

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office said it received a call shortly after 7 a.m. Monday involving a “bear encounter.” The attacks occurred “some time apart” on Monday, and the man and the dog were found within a couple of hundred yards of the area, according to FWC spokesperson George Reynaud. His daughter saw a bear attack the dog and then went looking for her father, who is believed to have been attacked earlier on Monday, Reynaud said
