Two commercial aircraft were ordered to abort landings at Reagan National Airport on Thursday after a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter entered airspace near the runway while en route to the Pentagon.

Delta Air Lines Flight 1671, arriving from Orlando, and Republic Airways Flight 5825, arriving from Boston, were both directed to perform go-arounds by air traffic control at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time.

“A UH-60 Blackhawk was directed by Pentagon Air Traffic Control to conduct a ‘go-around,’ overflying the Pentagon helipad in accordance with approved flight procedures,” said US Army spokesperson Capt. Victoria Goldfedib in a statement.

”As a result, DCA Air Traffic Control issued a ‘go-around’ to two civil fixed wing aircraft to ensure the appropriate deconfliction of airspace.”

Something's afoot. The military needs to draw up another flight path around Reagan International where these near misses won't happen again.

“The military needs to draw up another flight path around Reagan International where these near misses won’t happen again.”

If the military absolutely needs to train pilots running down the Potomac by Washington National, the answer is clear. Schedule the filghts and close the airspace around National for 15 to 30 minutes while the military flight is passing through.

The other alternative — close Washington National permanently and run all commercial flights to the nation’s capital through Dulles and BWI. Let the Congress critters take the subway from the Capitol to Dulles.

Almost every metropolitan airport in the country is miles away from the city center so that if there is an accident the collateral damage will be reduced.

Reagan National is a few short miles from the center of DC. An aircraft accident anywhere in the immediate vicinity could have catastrophic consequences for the entire country.

It is well documented how dangerous Reagan National is. The only reason Reagan hasn’t been closed to commercial aircraft already is because DC politicians like its convenience and do not want to travel the extra miles to Dulles.

That's the logical thing to do.

What are your credentials in air traffic control?

At any given moment Reagan has dozens of aircraft stacked up to take off or land. A "15 to 30 minute" pause would have ripple effects throughout the system, including flight diversions and cancellations.

It’s weird: all they have to do is follow 95 south well around all the commercial fightpaths and hang a left at Fort Belvoir. Why is the army insisting on a straight path past Reagan’s International?

Make the Military Choppers fly by at 10,000’ and then whoever wants to go to the Pentagon hop out with a parachute.

And the same thing for any politician that wants convenience just pop on out and land in the front yard.

Yep. DOT Secretary Sean Duffy is demanding an answer to that question. The VIP wanted a tour. I hope the VIP is given a tour of the dishonorable discharge facility.

It should be shut down to commercial flights. Limit it to military and official government traffic only.

I'm confused.. If the Blackhawk followed ATC direction, why would the other aircraft need to be waved off? So what was the point of giving the bird a go-around flight path? Did the Blackhawk ignore the tower (and this wasn't mentioned) and that's why?

Oh wait rereading that, it’s Pentagon ATC vs DC ATC. So not the Blackhawks fault, sounds like ATC1 and ATC2 need to coordinate better.
