An Army Black Hawk helicopter decided to take the “scenic route” near the Pentagon—and came way too close to two passenger planes trying to land in D.C.
Both jets were forced to pull up at the last second—one was just 450 feet from the ground.
This is the same Army brigade involved in a January crash that killed 67 people, the worst U.S. aviation disaster in over 20 years.
Officials are fuming, again.
And Reagan Airport? Still dealing with controller shortages, near-misses, and—oh yeah—a literal fistfight in the control tower last year.
Flying into D.C. is starting to feel like a deadly reality show.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
Script?
“ Script?”
Maybe they mean flight plan? Who knows?
Maybe all passenger plane flights now would benefit from a blessing by clergy along with instructions on the masks and other items.
I was told once the Cape Cod fishing boat crews were given a ceremony at the start of the season. Storms and accidents still happen in the Atlantic. Not sure if they still do that blessing ceremony anywhere.
Wikipedia excerpt.
The “Blessing of the Fleet” is a centuries-old tradition, often involving a clergyman blessing vessels like ships, fishing boats, or even recreational boats, to safeguard their crews and ensure a successful and safe journey or season. A way of publicly acknowledging a higher power and seeking blessings for those who work at sea.
We weren’t supposed to tell but it’s like the Truman Show.
‘Will no one rid me of this abomination?’ How many crashes will it take to stop the whirly-birds from flying around Reagan? A question for your Reps. Who were the VIPs on board that Black Hawk?
My advice: fly into Dulles or BWI!
It is not just in Washington DC. There is an absolute disregard for safety and proper operation in army aviation. I don’t know if it is a DEI problem, a lack of training, or just an attitude that they are the government amd the rules do not apply to them. What ever it is the army, the FAA, and the civil leadership just do not care and do not want to hear about it. I sincerely hope they don’t kill me some day on takeoff.
All those expert Vietnam helo pilots have retired now. I met one at the car wash recently. He loaned me his stool so I could clean the roof of my F150. Great guy, would love to hear all his stories.
I went to a bike blessing once back in the early 80s. I think it was billed as the “First Annual West Coast Bike Blessing.” I have some interesting photographs from that event. Lots of now extremely vintage hardware, but back then they were just old bikes. Not sure if the tradition was carried on or not.
Keep the choppers. Close Reagan National. It should have been closed 50 years ago. Either that or we need to go with miles of levees and massive landfilling to chanelize the Potomac and significantly lengthen runways. And even then, there still wouldn’t be enough runways and we would still have the noise abatement issues on the approaches.
National is still open because we have a commuter Congress full of Members who go home to campaign every weekend. They like having an airport so close to Capitol Hill.
Didn’t the FAA ban non essential helicopters at Reagan just 6 weeks ago ??
“Goes off Script” = sarcastic comment.
It will never be closed. Politicians love the close access and Congressmen love their reserved parking spots right up front by the terminal.
Sorry to have to ask it...but another female pilot?
They do a blessing of the fleet every year in New Bedford. But also in ports up and down the New England coast. I’m sure they do one on the Cape, but it’s more places like New Bedford, Gloucester, Portsmouth and Portland where the fleets of fishing boats are pretty large.
Pretty good chance that was the pilot’s last flight.
If they want me they will have to crash in to my house.
