Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in Helsinki that Russia must surrender all territory it gained since 2014.
Of course, this is an impossible request. Russia is winning the war, and it has no desire to relinquish control of Crimea or the Russian-speaking provinces it now controls.
Two months ago, the Trump White House knew that peace would not be possible as long as Zelensky was in charge. The man does not want peace.
Catturd has it right, and the Trump administration knew this weeks ago—no peace in Ukraine until Zelensky is gone.
It’s clear now that President Trump feels more sympathy for the Ukrainian soldiers than this psycho.

Around 1954, the Soviet Union took Russian lands and gave it to the ukraine. The ukraine flooded the lands with non-Russians then held a vote and proclaimed the people do not want to go back to Russia. Image that. It would be like California or Colorado letting the illegal aliens decide to give those States back to Mexico.

I suppose the best hopeful take on this is that it is an attempt to salvage somethin out of non-Russian occupied Ukraine, by asking for the moon and settling for a lesser but still acceptable compromise offer. The Ukranian difficulty is that they are negotiating from apparent weakness and there is no visible means of improving that leverage.
Trump has given him every chance to be reasonable and make a deal for peace and he has consistently spit in Trump's face.

Trump is going to work his best deal with Putin. Zalensky will sign or let the UK start WWIII with Russia or lose the entire country.
For my part, I am increasingly seeing Britain, my ancestors country of origin, as an enemy islamist state. So Putin lobbing a nuke into London does not have the same sting it might have done 20 years ago.

I think somebody recently tried to talk sense to Zelensky and said “You don’t hold the cards for this”. Well, he doesn’t, but just refuses to admit it. He wants to bargain from a map that existed 10 years ago. He’s lucky the Russians don’t want to negotiate from a map as it existed 120 years ago, when there was no Ukraine whatsoever.

Mr. Zelenskyy is talkin’ like he is winning and winning big. Sorry, Mr. Z. your losing the war. Only by starting a World War and getting all of NATO to march on Russia and take Moscow, capture Putin and occupation of the Russian Federation can you get Russia to give back all they took. The Duma has officially joined these lands to Russia. Getting them to overturn this would be very hard. If it was NATO and Ukraine vs. Russia—they Might win. But it would not be that way—It would be China, Iran, North Korea we would be fighting—and it would go round the world. Major cities would be lost. To save Zelenskyys job—millions would die. Just Not worth it. Besides—we are in no shape for a big war and all it entails—a draft (this time with women) Rationing of food, gas, power. End of civil liberties due to spies and terrorists. End to the internet, No!
