Mike Johnson skips DOGE cuts in stopgap bill, locks in $6.8 trillion spending through October—funds all the pork

A lot of folks aren’t catching what Speaker Mike Johnson’s doing—he’s saying no spending cuts from the Department of Government Efficiency are hitting this new stopgap funding bill. He’s set to keep government cash flowing through October, holding it steady at last year’s levels, no trimming anywhere. Johnson’s pushing a “clean” continuing resolution—freezing funds where they landed in fiscal 2024—to dodge a shutdown come March 15, letting talks about next year’s budget stretch out.

Johnson’s pitch is simple—pass a clean bill, no DOGE cuts, just keep the government running at the same pace as fiscal 2024, which clocked $6.752 trillion in total outlays from October 2023 to September 2024. That’s not $6.8 trillion dumped in a few months—it’s the full year’s spending, $1.833 trillion deficit included, and this stopgap locks that rate in place ‘til October. He’s calling for bipartisan nods, telling Democrats to sit down and hash it out to keep things humming past mid-March. This isn’t about slashing anything—it’s holding last year’s $6.752 trillion level, and the pile’s not shrinking.

So, what becomes of all the money that USAID was going to spend but now cannot? Can we use it to pay down the debt?

Absolutely. He’s the one the GOP blocked in 2017-2018 and leaked against ad refused to support in 2019 and 2020. And now he’s the one they are trying to prevent from cutting fraud and keeping taxes where they are at the very least.

I don’t think people have understood.

Just because they allocate the money—doesn’t mean they have to spend it.

The fired federal employees are going to stay fired.

More will be fired.

More contracts will be cancelled.

The money allocated for all this stuff will not be spent.

Maybe—but then we have to fight the impoundment battle in the courts all over again...

$40 Trillion national debt on the horizon. Then 50, then 60, then...
When the hyperinflation hits, it’s gonna stun us in its brutality.

I like Musk and DOGE and everything but it’s a drop of water in an ocean of red ink.

Same ole congress critters. Wolves in sheep’s clothing. Talk a big game at election time, all conservatives. Then after the swearing’-in’s they are right back to being socialist. I don’t trust 15 people on our side. I like Coach Tubbs, Tom Cotton, a couple of the Texas congressmen (& I am from Bama), I think one guy from OK is good, the ex-NFL player out in Utah seems good. But I don’t trust anyone in Sodom on the Potomac. Not a one. I hate the federal government. That have lied, cheated and stole from Veterans for decades to fund their kiss ass deals. To hell with them. We have to danged near go to war again just to claw back anything. I don’t disparage the War on Terror troops one bit. They deserve every damned dollar they can get. They deserved their parades. Yes, they suffer PTSD. But we Vietnam era vets had PTSD before they knew what PTSD was. That is why we have so many old Vietnam vets homeless, on drugs and alcohol. They self-treated while they didn’t get the help and benefits they deserved. Thousands died young because of it. And we didn’t get a parade. We got spit on in airports and called baby killers for 20 years, until the first Gulf War made soldiers, sailors and airmen fun again. To hell with congress. Damned thieves. I told my wife after Trump got elected, that if he got 15% of what he wanted accomplished, he’d be doing good. Deep down, I don’t think we will claw back as much as we hope. We might if Vance gets 8 years. Mabe after 12, we might. Might! Just one old soldier’s opinion.

Congress may approve the money, but Trump can impound it or in the case of USAID eliminating the agency altogether.

Going off this link....

https://www.cnn.com/politics/tracking-federal-workforce-firings-dg/index.html

...which is certainly over estimating the firing for dramatic effect, there have only been about 25,000 firings.

This is out of a total of 2,400,000 employees.

That is about 1%. Firing 1% of the workforce is not going to accomplish anything.

"Congress may approve the money, but Trump can impound it or in the case of USAID eliminating the agency altogether."

Exactly: Johnson can get the votes to keep things running -- twarting the Dem/Media efforts to hype a shutdown -- and then Trump implements the actual spending reductions.

Still seems odd, but it might work in the short term. Long term, though: still need real cuts.
