The last surviving founding member of The Band has died.
Keyboardist and saxophonist Garth Hudson, perhaps best known for his powerful and memorable Lowrey organ intro for the classic Band song “Chest Fever,” passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning at a nursing home in Woodstock, New York, Hudson’s estate executor confirmed to the Star.
He was 87.

Rest In Peace, Garth.
Hudson was first approached by Ronnie Hawkins and Levon Helm in the summer of 1961, after a Kapers show in London, and asked to join the Hawks, an offer he declined. The Hawks persisted, and in December 1961, Hudson agreed to join the band on two conditions: that Hawkins buy him a Lowrey organ, and that he be paid an extra $10 a week by each of the other band members to give music lessons to the other Hawks.
...Music From Big Pink...
Take a load off, Garth. Rest in peace, Dude...............
Yes... he was the musical backbone of The Band.. sort of how John Paul Jones was for Led Zeppelin. Not as heralded as Helm or Robertson but musically very gifted.
Party on, Garth!
Could never stand them.
Candians doing charactature American country/folk.
Levon was from Arkansas..
Cathy “Sundown” Smith is no longer with us either?
She died in 2020... I think of COPD. Gordon could write a great song, even with an inferior muse...
RIP, Garth.
The Last Waltz is the best rock and roll movie ever made.

Garth Hudson rest in peace.
A musician’s musician. He was so gifted and left a legacy that astounds to this day.
Lib guitarist at my gig last night sang “Bad Moon Rising” and said it was an “obvious pick” due to what happened yesterday.
I loved the wahh-wahh grief and answered by singing Route 66, cause it’s time to hit the road and motor on!
Robbie Robertson now Garth Hudson. 😥
I’ve never understood the cult-like following of ‘The Band’
Is it something like dead-heads? (Grateful Dead enthusiasts)
Don’t get me wrong, I like some GD music, but I can’t think of one single song by ‘The Band’
When I was a kid I always assumed CCR were from Louisiana or some such place, just because of their sound. Surprised the hell out of me when I found out they were from Northern California just like myself. I guess you can view the Canadian element of The Band in the same way. I once heard Robbie Robertson say that when he got off the train in Arkansas he understood where Rock and Roll came from, now that I’m living in the Arkansas River Valley I understand what he meant. Your liberal guitarist friend should be advised that what happened yesterday was America coming home to itself.
The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down is a great classic.
However, I never knew a thing about The Band and when The Last Waltz came out I thought it was just a movie because didn’t know a group by that name existed.
Do not understand why Scorsese devoted a film to them or why the film is considered a masterpiece.
Went looking for their songs just now, watched a video of The Night and I hope they were old or something because it was awful. Nothing like what I’ve heard on the radio all these years.
