The reservoir has been empty as of February of last year and no one told the fire department?

And the woman they promoted and pay 750,000 dollars per year to handle that has a job?

How?

...

One of California's biggest scandals (among many) is the way, way overpaid State public employees and CalPERS.

It's outrageous and (related) why even FDR had a major issue with public employee unions.

...

The Santa Ynez Reservoir for Pacific Palisades was dry since 2009...

How is this possible?

...

Well, she is on her 4th job since 2018 so she’s hardly excelling at any of them. Seems her focus is always on diversity instead of her actual jobs.

"It was unavoidable. Nobody could have stopped it. It is a once in a lifetime experience. Even if the reservoirs had been full and the hydrants had pressure, nobody could have stopped it. It is nobody's fault

But here's the catch. If the insurance companies dropped their Homeowners insurance because the Reservoir was dry and the hydrants weren't maintained the homeowners not only lost their home because of gross negligence they are also unable to rebuild because of it. The homeowners need to find out why the insurance dropped them. If it was because of the dry reservoir there needs to be a lawsuit.

See my comment above. City official said on live TV rather casually that they can use water from the Pacific ocean to put out these fires because the salt in the water can harm the environment. Newscaster gal went right along with him saying they have to protect the environment from salt (even if there are fires,). Not a functioning brain cells between them. (Oh, and San Francisco has pump station to use ocean water for big fires, go figure).

The Santa Ynez Reservoir for Pacific Palisades was dry since 2009... How is this possible?

This is not true according to recent reports. The reservoir was drained last February to fix a torn reservoir cover. I posted an article the yesterday.

How long had the Santa Ynez Reservoir been closed for repairs?

According to this article State to probe why Pacific Palisades reservoir was offline, empty when firestorm exploded:

Excerpt:

Officials said that the Santa Ynez Reservoir had been closed since about February for repairs to its cover, leaving a 117-million-gallon water storage complex empty in the heart of the Palisades for nearly a year...

Emptying of the reservoir began in February after a tear in the floating cover measuring several feet allowed debris, bird droppings and other objects to enter the water supply. DWP drained the site to avoid contamination and comply with water regulations.

DWP sought bids for the repair in April, at a cost of up to $89,000. In November, the utility signed off on a contract with a Lakeside firm for about $130,000, records show.

The status of the repairs is unclear. The DWP's employee union leader condemned the months-long wait to restore the reservoir.

"It's completely unacceptable that this reservoir was empty for almost a year for minor repairs," Gus Corona, business manager of IBEW Local 18, said in an interview with The Times.

"This work should have been done in-house, and they shouldn't have depended on a contractor to do it," he said. "I truly believe it's something that could have been avoided."

Joseph Ramallo, a chief communications officer for DWP, said the reservoir was scheduled to reopen in February.

They do use some ocean water from time to time—but the big problem is they had no contingency plan for using on it on a large scale.

Everything was ad hoc due to a lack of planning and leadership and coordination.

That goes back to the leftist lying Newscum, the Commie DEI Mayor and the DEI clown car of folks she hired at ridiculously high salaries.

There seems to be a developing narrative, that people are critical of something Trump said, rather than being critical of California authorities who are responsible for dealing with this.

So instead of discussing how the heck this calamity could happen, people such as Gavin Newsom and media, would rather criticize something Trump said.

I’ve been pondering the same thing since day one...seawater!

As you stated, introducing seawater into a municipal potable water system would open a can of worms, but...way better than zero water at hand for fire fighting.

I thought about dedicated fire suppression reservoirs up in the hills solely supplied with seawater as backup. A seawater pumping station at the shore connected to the reservoirs with a 12” main ought to do the trick...over time of course. There would be a substantial pumping head to overcome maybe needing a booster station part way up.

But then there are the seawater lines from the reservoirs servicing the non-potable, “fire only” hydrants. Oy...lots of infrastructure there, and I haven’t figured out how to pull it all off...yet.

Pay me $750K, and I’ll work on it. 😀

Corrosive properties of the Saltwater.

When they get the fires out they can Flush and Burn the Distrobution System.

In fact the fire department should own and maintain its own reservoirs feeding the fire hydrants.

Grossly impracticable and wasteful.

On the other hand, yearly inspections of support infrastructure is mandated.

Exactly. They did have a scoop planes getting water from the ocean for PP, but it was a seat of your pants operation. They should have tugboat or something like that right off shore. It’s very Keystone cops.

It’s the kind of thing that happens when Marxist-Democrats are supported for election by millions of morons!

At the time that key resources should have been mobilized (including the U.S. Navy/Coast Guard whoever had fire-fighting capability) the Mayor was in Ghana and the Fire Chief lacked the knowledge, skills and ability to get done what needed to get done.

Meanwhile Newscum refused to step up and take responsibility and pitch in to deal with the problem. He was focused on dodging responsibility and initiating a public relations/propaganda offensive to try to salvage his future Presidential plans.

It was a stunning lack of leadership.

Many organizations can get away with weak senior leadership if the next tier in the organization—senior staff—has highly skilled and experience and dedicated people ready to do whatever is needed to solve the problem. It looks like that tier was missing in action as well.

They were probably watered down and demoralized by DEI practices in the state, county and city.

That is called “quiet quitting” where people take the paycheck but refuse to do anything not specifically required on paper.

In fairness it may just be they were totally unqualified for their positions and way over their heads in a true crisis.

Not gonna happen. Criminals, like Marxist-Democrat politicians, are a protected class in that burned-out State!

It’s not as simple as poking a straw into a glass of water. This will never happen in California. It will take decades just to get the dozens of reviews and approvals required by local, county, state, and federal authorities.
