A BOB DYLAN CLASSIC. 50 YEARS OLD TODAY. “YEDIOT WIND” – WHAT IS IT?

Weldon Kees write in his poem “June 1940″ : ” ……. the men who were haters of war are mounting the platform./An idiot wind blows; the conscience dies.”

Bob Dylan's Idiot Wind is a masterpeice or a messterpeice of fractured emotions and traces of deep love (“Sweet lady ……. a lone soldier on the cross (who) won the wars after losin’ every battle ……. Down the road to ecstasy/I followed you beneath the stars/Hounded by your memory/And all your ragin’ glory ……. }

What I hear Dylan sing in the Chris is “Yediot Wind”

What is that? A condemnation of you, the others who are “educated”, is what it feels like to me.

Is it an America First song?

An earlier attempt to drain the swamp?

“How does it feel?! Ohhhh how does it feel? To be own your own. With no direction known, like a complete unknown, like a rollin’ stone.”

Very great tune, very great lyrics. One of the greatest songs ever

The running joke was that The Byrds did Dylan better than Dylan did Dylan.

This is Roger McGuinn of the Byrds on My Back Pages

He does this song better than anyone including Dylan, standing behind him

Don’t miss it

Idiot wind? Best example I got is anytime jobiden or Cum Alla talks.

Dylan is arguably the greatest American songwriter ever. If you think he couldn’t sing then you haven’t listened to Lay Lady Lay. He sang the way he did so people would listen to the words. He did things his way and we’re all better off for it.

I actually have been interested in the phenomenon of Dylan. As a musical entertainer, that's me too, his success fascinates me. In a sense, recognizing there's no accounting for taste, his success seems to me to parallel that of W. Clinton, Obama, Biden etc in touching something in the progressive mind. So much so that his musicianship is of no real importance in selling his songs...it's his lyrics.

I've read what is purported to be his Nobel lecture. I thought it was quite good. I've also read comments asctibed to him stating he regards himself as basically a centrist. I think he has also stated that he only belongs to his own political party.

But when it comes to respecting the musicianship of progressives, it's got to be the caliber of PP&M etc. to trip my trigger.

Nope

these people have repulsed me forever

They are grifters

I have always and still love Dylan He has nothing to do with the grift these people exude

Very good. (Aside from Dylan, I’d forgotten that Neil Young can’t really sing either.)

Joan Baez’s “Diamonds and Rust” is a lot like Dylan’s “Blood on the Tracks” except she’s mostly singing covers. Good stuff when they stay personal and out of their leftist politics. On that album she sings “Simple Twist of Fate” and one verse she does her Dylan imitation. I recall reading that much later she did that in concert and the youngsters were asking “what happened to her voice” because they really didn’t know who Dylan was.

I keep quoting this to people...

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
The battle outside ragin’
Will soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’

Sounds a little like someone is promoting violent insurrection. Today’s irony is that yesterday’s leftist radicals are today’s entrenched reactionaries.

I’ve heard drunks at karaoke hour sing better than Dylan. In fact I never heard one who sang worse.

And they’ll raise their hands
Saying we’ll meet all your demands
But we’ll shout from the bow
Your days are numbered
And like Pharoah’s tribe
They’ll be drowned in the tide
And like Goliath
They’ll be conquered

Well, I respect to your comments...Whatever one thinks of Dylan’s significance, there’s no denying his rare ability to earn around an estimated 500 million bucks. He’s definitely got something going on for many listeners.

What a brilliant, brilliant lyric. Made me cry. I had never concentrated on the words of this song before; your post made me look them up. People enjoy hating on genius; but a genius walks among us.

Idiot Wind

Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press
Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out quick, but when they will I can only guess
They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy
She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me
I can't help it if I'm lucky

People see me all the time and they just can't remember how to act
Their minds are filled with big ideas, images and distorted facts
Even you, yesterday you had to ask me where it was at
I couldn't believe after all these years, you didn't know me even better than that
Sweet lady

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth
Blowing down the back-roads heading south
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot, babe
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe

I ran into the fortune-teller, who said beware of lightning that might strike
I haven't known peace and quiet for so long I can't remember what it's like
There's a lone soldier on the cross, smoke pouring out of a boxcar door
You didn't know it, you didn't think it could be done, in the final end he won the wars
After losing every battle

I woke up on the roadside, daydreaming about the way things sometimes are
Visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are making me see stars
You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with lies
One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzing around your eyes
Blood on your saddle

Idiot wind, blowing through the flowers on your tomb
Blowing through the curtains in your room
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot, babe
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe

It was gravity which pulled us down and destiny which broke us apart
You tamed the lion in my cage but it just wasn't enough to change my heart
Now everything's a little upside down, as a matter of fact the wheels have stopped
What's good is bad, what's bad is good, you'll find out when you reach the top
You're on the bottom

I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt ways had finally made you blind
I can't remember your face anymore, your mouth has changed, your eyes don't look into mine
The priest wore black on the seventh day and sat stone-faced while the building burned
I waited for you on the running boards, near the cypress trees, while the springtime turned
Slowly into Autumn

Idiot wind, blowing like a circle around my skull
From the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot, babe
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe

I can't feel you anymore, I can't even touch the books you've read
Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishing I was somebody else instead
Down the highway, down the tracks, down the road to ecstasy
I followed you beneath the stars, hounded by your memory
And all your raging glory

I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I'm finally free
I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me
You'll never know the hurt I suffered nor the pain I rise above
And I'll never know the same about you, your holiness or your kind of love
And it makes me feel so sorry

Idiot wind, blowing through the buttons of our coats
Blowing through the letters that we wrote
Idiot wind, blowing through the dust upon our shelves
We're idiots, babe
It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves

What I hear Dylan sing in the Chris is “Yediot Wind” What is that?

I had to read that several times to get that you meant "chorus". I don't think he meant anything figurative by "yeeeediot." I think it was a howl of pain and anguish. He is not telling you he is hurt beyond description; he is showing you.
