Haitian migrants are leaving Springfield, Ohio, “in droves” driven by fears that President-elect Donald Trump will deport them as soon as he enters office.
The small town made global headlines in September when Trump brought up reports that some immigrants were eating the residents’ pets and local wildlife.
“In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats,” said Trump.
“They’re eating the pets of the people that live there.”
Trump’s remarks took on a life of their own, immediately becoming viral TikTok videos and even music videos on various social media platforms.
Two months later, the migrants are self-deporting.
“Some folks don’t have credit cards or access to the internet, and they want to buy a bus ticket or a plane ticket, so we help them book a flight,” Margery Koveleski told the Guardian. “People are leaving.”
“The owner of one store is wondering if he should move back to New York or to Chicago – he says his business is way down,” Koveleski added.
According to a report from The Guardian:
“Leaders in Springfield’s Haitian community and others have relayed reports of Haitians fleeing the city of 60,000 people in recent days for fear of being rounded up and deported after Donald Trump’s victory in the 5 November presidential election.”
Co-founder of the Haitian Community Alliance, Jacob Payen, said, “People are fully aware of the election result, and that is why they are leaving; they are afraid of a mass deportation.”
“Several of my customers have left. One guy with his family went to New Jersey; others have gone to Boston. I know three families that have gone to Canada.”
While some flee to nearby cities to evade deportation, others have taken temporary asylum in Brazil.
Trump’s new border czar, Tom Homan, called on gang members to self-deport because “we know who you are, and we’re gonna come and find you.”
“While we’re out prioritizing the public safety threats and national security threats, if you wanna self-deport, you should self-deport because, again, we know who you are, and we’re gonna come and find you,” Homan said
“So if you wanna self-deport, that’s fine,” Homan continued.
“But criminals and gang members, they get no favors from this administration. You came to this country illegally, which is a crime. You committed crimes against United States citizens, some heinous crimes. You get no grace period. So we’re coming for you.”

Deportation plans
As we highlighted last week, the Trump administration aims to double the 41,000 detention beds that Congress allowed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Illegal migrants would be held in such facilities before being flown back to their country of origin.
Trump representative Karoline Leavitt told NBC:
“The American people re-elected President Trump by a resounding margin, giving him a mandate to implement the promises he made on the campaign trail. He will deliver.”
Trump himself suggested that the 1798 law, ‘the Alien Enemies Act,’ could also be used to deport alleged gang members.
Newly nominated deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, said Trump is going full steam ahead in his plans for deportations.
“Any activists who doubt President Trump’s resolve in the slightest are making a drastic error: Trump will unleash the vast arsenal of federal powers to implement the most spectacular migration crackdown,” he told The New York Times.
GO TOM HOMAN!!!!
Aren’t they just moving to other states, like IL and MA, where the governments there might provide more protection?
WHERE ARE THEY GOING?
Canada
Canada on high alert for migrants who may flee US after Donald Trump’s win
Hit the road, Jacques!
I would support an overseas military operation, that actually BENEFITS America, to secure the Port-au-Prince airport, and conduct non-stop flights of C-35s to repatriate all illegal Haitians.
Ohio residents will be able to let their cats and dogs go outside again.
If they are, it’ll be easier to find more of them.
Could be, but any illegals with criminal records will likely become subject to deportation. The criminals and gang members are low lying for ICE that will be hard for sanctuary states to protect. Most people want these dangerous thugs gone.
At least those are solid Blue States.
I wonder if that plane shooting was a sign of things to come there. Me thinks the people there are sending a message.
Anything on the apartment buildings in Colorado overrun with Venezuelan gangs?
Great!! We’re going to visit MA soon 😵💫
YIKES!!
cats and dogs are coming out of hiding as a result
I would love to know the number of animals gone “missing.” Geese too.

As Jacob Payen, a co-founder of the Haitian Community Alliance who runs a business that includes helping Haitians in Springfield to file tax returns, said: “People are fully aware of the election result, and that is why they are leaving; they are afraid of a mass deportation.
“Several of my customers have left. One guy with his family went to New Jersey; others have gone to Boston. I know three families that have gone to Canada.”
Some are thought to have moved to nearby cities such as Dayton, where they believe they would be less visible to law enforcement. Others who had temporary asylum in Brazil are pondering going back to the South American country, community leaders say.
Springfield’s Haitian community has been in the spotlight since Trump falsely accused immigrants here of eating pets during a presidential debate in September. Since then, the city has seen false bomb threats and marches by neo-Nazi groups after having experienced a revival in recent years in large part because of Haitians who took jobs in local produce packaging and machining factories that many previously there found undesirable.
