Kotsovos story-—one of many accompanying the line “We can’t be racist, we won’t have any of them around here.”

In the 70’s someone from out of town had balls enough to show up at the Timber Inn and dance with a white woman, prompting a published letter to the editor in the World calling for a coon hunt.

IIRC, the mayor at the time approved of the message—but at 30+ years, my memory may have caused the story to grow in the telling.

I would shoot myself in the face before I killed an innocent animal for no reason.

Yes, they’re called tree rats but squirrels and rats are NOT a rabies threat. It’s very rare for a rat to have rabies and there are no cases in the literature of a rat transmitting rabies to a human.

What kind of stupid people work for the government. This is supposed to be their job and they are ignorant of the facts. Either that, or they are just vindictive s.o.b’s

In colonial days squirrels were favored pets of children, they were no cost to feed and easy to tame. I had a pet squirrel I rescued from our cat and he was a delightful animal, he would make us laugh with his antics.

Absurd, yes, until one realizes it had nothing to do with preventing any kind of actual threat to humans. This was about asserting power. Imagine: Some bureaucrat, somewhere, had the authority to either carry out this ‘hit’ on the damned squirrel, or to tell the nosey, busy-body yayhoo complainant that the matter would be investigated and appropriate measures taken. Having been in the role of the enforcing bureaucrat many times over my career, I can tell you there’s no way in Hell I’d use my resources to kill somebody’s flippin’ squirrel. Just wouldn’t happen. Let Karen screech all she wants.

Hmm. Sounds vaguely familiar. The only mayor that I recall from those days was Bob Hale. Looking it up, I see that he served from ‘75-77. From PoliticalGraveyard.com:
Mayors of Coos Bay, 1953-87 (may be incomplete!) Robert Marsden, Jr. as of 1953-56 Robert Hale as of 1975-77 Donald E. Poage as of 1979-81 Charles L. Holbert as of 1983-85 William S. Schroeder as of 1987

Why would anyone think that the loss of one or two squirrels is a big deal to Democrats?

They were perfectly fine with Fauci spending weeks/months torturing and killing beagle puppies.

They did this because while most of Upstate is MAGA red, this area is really, really, REALLY MAGA red.

Deep State was sending us a message.

We will kill it for its own good.

We are government and WE are in charge.

The a holes in Fish and Wildlife do that here. Some farm or rural family will rescue an orphaned deer or a raccoon and it will live among the family pets or livestock for years and no one cares. Then, some jerk in government gets wind of it and sends out a goon to “humanely euthanize” the animal for its own good. It’s not bothering anyone, it is happy as can be roaming around with other animals, BUT government has to remind everyone who is in charge and they will kill whatever and whoever they have to to remind everyone of that fact.

This is yet another example of “I’m from the government...and here to help you”. NEVER trust any employee of the government...eternal vigilance is called for.

There has been more than a few country gray squirrels consumed in my household. Mrs. Dutch Boy does a good job with woodchuck stew too.

With that justification by the New York State authorities, they next have to go into Central Park in Manhattan and round up all the squirrels there, and the pigeons too, because they’re so tame that they go right up to people who feed them.
