This has the same feel. It’s the only way the federal rescue response could be completely absent.
Something else to note is that you can’t GET a semi into a lot of these places to drop aid. Most of the roads have major sections gone or they are damaged to the point they can no longer support the weight. There are lots of bridges that are just plain gone. There aren’t large airports in the stricken area to fly heavy cargo transport aircraft carrying into either, nor is the terrain suitable for mass air drops of supplies by large aircraft. This is why they’ve had that panicked call out for private pilots and their helis and other relatively small aircraft to fly aid in and people out. The biggest thing that can do airdrops or fly in/out in a lot of these places is a DC-3 or C-47, and some people have shown up with those. The biggest helis that can get in to airlift in a lot of places are MD500/OH-6s. The US military doesn’t have a whole lot of small assets like these any more.

Get the stuff close, then use helicopters to go the rest of the way.
A DC3T can easily land with a 12K pound load of supplies into and out of 4000ft. runway even if it was sod.
The private pilots bringing back videos of that area are showing that there’s no way to get loads closer in. There’s actually been an aid convoy or three sitting stalled a bit more than that out because they can’t get closer - not because the government is stopping them but because the roads or bridges are gone or unsafe.
The Blue Ridge Parkway, in fact, is completely impassible and is just *gone* in many places.
