On the evening of September 6, 2024, Owen Beierman, 12, and his father, Ryan, 43, were hunting bears near Siren, Wisconsin. Siren is about 50 miles north and 50 miles east of Minneapolis, in northwest Wisconsin.
Owen shot a 200 lb black bear with his .350 Legend rifle. The bear ran off, leaving a strong blood trail. Even mortally wounded bears often run for some distance. The Beiermans borrowed a Labrador retriever from their neighbors and started tracking the bear about 20 minutes after it was shot. It was already getting dark. Game is often shot just after sunrise or shortly before sunset.
The Beiermans could not know if they would find a dead bear or a wounded bear. They were in thick brush when the first indicator happened. The dog came running past them in full retreat. They managed to take a few steps forward into a slight clearing.

It was dark when they again came across the wounded bear staring at them from under an oak tree, the dad said.

Empty handgun?

Hence, now empty.
They went for a fight hunting bears, and they got it.
I guess the picture with the bear is from an earlier kill. the boy looks about 8 in that one.
Dang, fairly nasty facial laceration.
Just about zero information about how the boy stopped the attack. Did he kill the bear instantly? Did he frighten it off? What gun did he use?
Great writing.
You probably have to click a link and watch fifteen minutes of video about bears and bear hunting before you find out the pertinent information. That is, if you remember why you started watching the video by the time it gets to the actual story. Also we read about this right here a couple of weeks ago because a lot of news gets recycled weeks and months after the event occurs.
350 Legend....?

Transition from 350, a rifle, to hand.gun not clear.
I’d prefer something better than .350L for deer, let alone bear.
I have never actually seen a .350 Legend bullet but have looked at the ballistics.
I knew it was a straight wall case, which somewhat limits the velocity but here is the performance with 150-180 gr bullets.

I did not know that the .350 Legend bullets were .357 diameter.
Why did they use Weapons of War against such a cute and cuddly animal? (don’t laugh, this is the mindset of the people running this country - their only use for weapons of war is to attack countries that don’t adhere to their ‘social values’)

My choice, too among the straight-walled bullets. .45-70 +P loads are big hitters. They are capable of taking down anything that walks wild on this continent.
One would think if you were summarizing someone else's reporting you'd include headline-supporting details in the summary. But you're right. The gal at the New York Post did a far better job of including critical facts than Ammoland.

I give the dad respect. In another article that I read he said “The bear was fighting for his life, and I was fighting for mine.”
He also said that was his last bear hunt!
