One modern tank that was supposed to end the stalemate was the vaunted German Leopard 2 tank. This modern beast has all the goodies that you would expect. It is arguably NATO’s best tank produced by a European member. The Leopard is fast, powerful, and agile, with great armor and a respectable gun.
But how has it done in Ukraine? And what does that performance say about the overall future of the tank?

Heavy use of drones has changed the equation.
In World Of Tanks Leopard 1 hides and snipes and if it’s spotted it gets ammo racked and destroyed ,LOL
A typical drone team goes through several dozen drones a day.
The tank died when silicon chips and software became a thing that could guide a missile.
I think a new word will come out of this war. DADS - Drone Air Defense System. An armor-mounted multi-band jamming system will eventually be developed. It will have the basic frequency coverages and multiple software controlled modes for existing and new drone CC modes.
“So are these armored beasts now totally obsolete?”
Reminds one of the USS Alabama in Mobile or the Battleship North Carolina in Wilmington.
The Germans had fewer than 200 MBTs. And, fewer than 75 operational jet aircraft. They need to get their stuff together before Poland marches across Germany for a change.
I spent so much money on that game back in the day. And then tanks that never actually hit production or were paper concepts ended up the most OP.
People downgrade tanks until they have to get up and cross open spaces under fire.
“Heavy use of drones has changed the equation.”
Yep. The era of the tank is largely over. They are pretty much rolling metal coffins at this point, unless used for mobile artillery (and that’s not great).
Drones have become the game changer. At least for the present.
The next acronym following DADS, AD, Autonomous Drones.
They will "think" on their own and find their targets without needing a radio signal to be jammed.
Yeah, I see some IFV's making runs to assault positions, but they are generally smoking from multiple hits by the time they reach the assault point and disgorge an infantry squad. If I were an assault commander these days I'd be shopping for tunneling equipment, no joke.
Nor is a signal (gps) necessary for navigation.
Let’s see…..
How did that go?
Oh, yeah….
“Fight as a combined arms team.”
Tanks are meant to be a part of a combined arms team.
The Ukrainians are advised by intelligence and Special Forces people who fight with pistols.
Historians explain confederacy and axis powers lost their wars because of Smaller population base, less manufacturing. You point out that ukr has a much smaller population and much less manufacturing capability than russian federation, and that they cannot win because of it. OH, that’s totally different.
Vlad is correct: all the western equipment will burn like all the others, F-16’s, M1’s, M777, MRAPs, Bradleys, Leopards, Patriots, Strykers, M113’s, …all our “ stuff”, what a miserable waste…..much will be needed in our future forever wars.
Pentagon twinkle toes Generals learning a lesson about sucking up to senile Joe and war cheerleaders agenda.
After reading the book Red Storm Rising like 30 years Ago I told myself to NEVER find myself sitting in a tank during battle.
