Mary Osako, please explain why UCLA hasn’t fired the security guard who stood by, watched, and did nothing to intervene, as masked terrorists prevented a Jewish student named Eli Tsives from entering the university.

This video from UCLA shows a security guard standing by, watching, and doing nothing to intervene, as masked terrorists prevented a Jewish student named Eli Tsives from entering the university.

@UCLA Jewish student trying to attend class is forcibly prevented entry by 6 masked Pro-Hamas students while UCLA guard stands by and DOES NOTHING.

After the video went viral, Mary Osako, the school’s Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communications, issued the following statement:

“Yesterday some physical altercations occurred among demonstrators in Royce Quad. In response, we have taken several actions to significantly increase our security presence, including adding greater numbers of campus law enforcement, safety personnel and student affairs monitors.”

“There was also a report of a student’s access to class being blocked by demonstrators yesterday. This kind of disruption to our teaching and learning mission is abhorrent, plain and simple. As such, we’ve taken several, immediate actions: Our student conduct process has been initiated, and could lead to severe disciplinary action including expulsion or suspension. The barriers that demonstrators used to block this student’s access to class have been removed and we have staff located around Royce Quad to help ensure that they will not go up again. We have also engaged law enforcement to investigate.”

“While the demonstration remains largely peaceful, our campus must remain a place where we treat one another with respect and recognize our shared humanity — not a place where we devolve into violence and bullying.”

So Osako said that the school will be “adding greater numbers of campus law enforcement, safety personnel and student affairs monitors.”

So the school plans to hire additional security guards, so they, too, can stand by, watch, and do nothing to intervene, when this kind of thing happens.

So here’s my question for Mary Osako:

Mary Osako, please explain why UCLA hasn’t fired the security guard who stood by, watched, and did nothing to intervene, as masked terrorists prevented a Jewish student named Eli Tsives from entering the university.

The security guard is there to protect buildings and administrators, not students.

I sympathize with the security guard. If they touch someone, that's a potential criminal assault charge and lawsuit, and possibly loss of license and livelihood.

I've seen security guards stand and watch as shoplifters exit with items. The guards do nothing. They might even be ordered to do nothing. If they intervene, the store might get sued.

Security guards don't enjoy the same immunity that police do. Their main purpose is to act as a deterrent by their very presence. Watch and report.

They were undoubtedly told they would be fired if they in DID intervene. He should be asking her why Newsom on down hasn’t been fired.

I must defend security guard guy a little here. At the very start of the video, you can see the word “security” on his shirt. He is not a police officer. He does not have police powers or qualified immunity if things go south.

Security guards have been criminally prosecuted for laying their hands on people when they didn’t have good enough reason to do so.

A security guard’s job is to observe and report. Physically intervene only when someone is in serious danger. That wasn’t the case here.

Security guard guy is no hero. It would have been nice if he had yelled at the mob instead of just standing there. But I don’t think he committed a firing offense, assuming that he at least called the incident in.

If he had been a campus police officer, it would be a far different story. It would be dereliction of duty, a firing offense.

In this case, the security guard should have said something. He should have told the masked people to let the Jewish student enter.

How do you know he didn't say anything? He did nothing effective -- no force or violence -- yet he might have said something. But it makes for a juicier story to say he did nothing.
