More taxpayer money benefits pro sports owners amid ‘stadium construction wave’
Maryland Matters ^ | February 25, 2024 | Kevin Hardy

As sports stadiums built in the 1990s show their age, many professional sports teams are looking for new facilities — and public money to pay for them.

“We are just in the heating up phase of the next stadium construction wave,” said J.C. Bradbury, a Kennesaw State University economics professor who has researched the issue. “That’s part of the reason why you’re seeing a lot more stadiums happen.”

It isn’t just the Washington Commanders, who are obligated to play at FedEx Field in Landover until 2027 but are looking for a new home somewhere in Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. FedEx opened in 1997.

Across the country, pro sports teams are gearing up to improve or build new stadiums and arenas. In Chicago, both the NFL’s Bears and the MLB’s White Sox are exploring moves. Baseball’s Cleveland Guardians, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland Athletics and Kansas City Royals are all working toward new or improved stadiums. So are the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Clippers.

D.C. and Virginia are currently fighting over the Washington Capitals’ and Washington Wizards’ desire to build a new arena in Alexandria, Virginia. And Maryland and the Baltimore Orioles just inked a deal to keep the baseball team in Charm City for 30 years.

Lambeau field is over 65 years old and I don’t hear them bitching about how old it is.

Owned by the community. So that's why they don't care about how old the stadium is.

I’m white and I don’t watch any of the major leagues in the US.
Can I sue? (Perhaps RICO or rape, but not rape-rape...)

Pro sports is an important element in the strategy of distracting Americans from what’s really going on.

Step 1 of being rich: learn how not to pay for stuff. As long as politicians are willing to whore themselves out for high profile companies stadiums, and factories, and offices, will be be built with public funds. Want it to stop? Stop electing whores.

The players and teams make enough money that they have no need for taxpayer money. If the taxpayers are required to pay for the stadiums, anyone who can prove that they are taxpayers should get free admission.

Northern Virginia, Northern Virginia, Northern Virginia, Northern Virginia, home of liberal Marxist carpetbaggers.... that’s why the rest of Virginia doesn’t like Northern Virginia, Northern Virginia, Northern Virginia.

And the rest of Virginia certainly doesn’t want their hard-earned tax dollars going to pay for sports complexes in Northern Virginia because we need potholes filled bridges built and many other projects that we pay good money for but can’t seem to get on anybody’s schedule.... but talk about a Sports Stadium and suddenly money magically appears is complete abd totalitarian BS.

Exactly. See what happens when the taxpayers have the say?

Money doesn’t get pissed away.

This new stadium thing is going on in my town. The city wanted to hang ONE BILLION dollars on the taxpayers but got do much pushback they went to plan B which is a ridiculously expensive renovation.

And people like me that probably will never set foot in the place have to foot the bill.

Ticks me off to no end

We'll going have to tell the owners that they can move to SLC or St. Louis and dare them to uproot the team.

I think they're starting to lose goodwill with their fans. There are other things to do for entertainment.

And you can always go to a local minor league game which is much cheaper.

Umm, that doesn’t work. Teams move all the time. Notice the Dodgers aren’t in Brooklyn. They might lose goodwill with the fans they left, but they do OK in the new town.

And you’re ignoring the bigger issue. It isn’t just sports. Politicians ALWAYS want the big company. Amazon’s HQ2 did the same thing. Every Toyota factory. People piss and moan about sports running these negotiations, but never bother to notice that sports learned this from others. You don’t think it was an accident Detroit became Motor City do you? Nor a coincidence when most of the car companies built factories elsewhere?

If you’re gonna bitch about it, bitch about ALL OF IT. Not just one section.

Lambeau gets remodeled all the time, one just finished last year, and while they do make the team pay some, it’s still mostly done with taxes.

You're 100% right.

I'll still say no to the blackmail. Brooklyn is doing fine without the Dodgers. And the Dodgers are doing even better in L.A.

I absolutely agree. Which is why I point out how prevalent the blackmail is. It ain’t just sports. And if you want it to end in sports step 1 is to recognize it’s everywhere, and stop it across the board.

The opposite of the FedEx Field. They didn't even bother to maintain the stadium and it's not even 30 years old. Dan Synder was trying to get a new stadium built. Well, he's not even the owner any longer.

In Montevideo, Uruguay, they still use the stadium build for the first world soccer championship. Now almost hundred years old, it still host international soccer games! NO problems!
