A 75-year-old Vermont homeowner opened fire with a muzzleloader allegedly after three armed men tried to breaking into his residence late Tuesday night.
What are the details? Gordon Richard Sr. told investigators the trio tried breaking into his home on Sandy Hill Road in the town of Georgia through a locked interior door from a separate section of the residence where his son lives, WCAX-TV reported, citing state police.
Richard added to police that he shot one of the men with a muzzleloader, shut the door, and called 911, the station said.
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m., WCAX said. The town of Georgia is about a half-hour north of Burlington.

WCAX's Facebook post about the incident has attracted nearly 400 comments, many of them supportive of the elderly homeowner's actions:
"It’s about time," one commenter wrote. "Good for the older gent protecting himself and his belongings."
"Them old guys have one good fight left in them," another user observed. "Best to leave 'em alone." "This elderly man better not receive any charges," another commenter declared.
"This is what it’s come to here in VT," another user concluded. "People need to protect themselves if the court system won’t, by letting out repeat offenders and being soft on crime."

My flintlock is a custom built Tulle Fusil de Chasse, .62 cal or 20 gauge. Pretty good with buck and ball and shot too.
For home protection I always roll with the blunderbuss … opinions always vary in these guns threads though!
Ouch. That’ll leave a mark.
On the one he shot, the others are now deaf. “WHAT I CANT HEAR YOU!”
Old people don’t seem to ever learn. He had one shot, and it may have saved him this time, but you need to be armed with something that has a much higher capacity. And it ain’t a revolver, which is another ancient relic totally unsuited for today’s wolf packs. I carry and I’m packing a Glock 23 with two spare mags. That’s 40 rounds to neutralize any threat I might encounter. I’d rather have too many rounds and not need them than have too few rounds and need more.
I’ve seen some Beautiful ‘Brown Bess’ but I just took out my .50 cal Hawkens that I
call Hatchet Jack! A Pie plate at 100yds
No Problem.
Smile…
LOL
Shoulda finished up with a war club and tomahawk.
That’s my favorite medieval weapon. A spiked ball flying through the air….. :)
“Tally ho lads” - I came here to post this, and am secretly glad I am not the first one! Thanks!
Been a while since I saw that one. Found it on Reddit!
Yeah, I would NOT want to be ahot by a muzzle loader. Have you seen those projectiles? Holy sh¡t!
I’m not the author. It’s been rattling around out there for a while.
A muzzle loader can be very accurate and deadly. Back in the 1970’s we built a lot of them, flintlock and percussion, even tapped some of them and put scopes on them.
My cousin forgot to pull his ramrod and shot it through the target. After that we started experiments with old wooden arrows with razor tips. We just used a double patch and no ball, slid the arrow down the barrel, and boom. Was super accurate, but made the fletching smell like rotten eggs.
Not widely discussed, but the northern border is under siege as well.
That one can be very effective in the right hands. I like it.
If you happened to have an operational replica cannon from the American civil war, is it legal to shoot somebody with it who is trying to break in or has broken in?
Hee hee hee
Your a bit extreme, but that will do the job.
Joke aside. 2nd Amendment still plies to the elderly. I’m 76, and can still do most of what I did my entire life. Take no meds, but am aware of the relative danger we face today. Even in Rural America.
I don’t own a flintlock. I do have an antique 1873 Springfield trapdoor 45-70 that was given to my father when he was 3 years old. It is a bit long, but works fine. Not a close range weapon.
Also have a (made in 1924) Winchester model 12 16 ga. pump shotgun. A bit better suited to close range. Have to load shot shells for it, it is chambered for 2-1/2 hulls. But still goes bang.
I like to play gunsmith, had pretty good luck doing it. Old guys like old stuff. hee hee hee
