The Army is tossing its mandate for potential recruits to have a high school diploma or GED certificate to enlist in the service, in one of the most dramatic moves yet in the escalating recruiting crisis hitting the entire Defense Department.
On Thursday, the service announced that individuals may enlist without those previously required education certifications if they ship to basic training this fiscal year, which ends Oct. 1.
Recruits must also be at least 18 years old and otherwise qualify for a job in the active-duty Army. They also must score at least a 50 on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB, an SAT-style quiz to measure a potential recruit's academic ability.
50 on the test is a relatively low score, with 31 being the minimum to qualify for service. Combat arms jobs such as infantrymen and cavalry scouts need only minimal scores to serve, while admin work such as a human resources specialist or public affairs require scores of 100 or higher.
Previously, the Army would allow people to enlist if they hadn't finished high school yet at the age of 17 with parental consent. Those recruits typically wouldn't ship to basic training until they completed school.
The change follows another shift in policy this week when the service relaxed its tattoo rules, allowing potential recruits to enlist with tattoos on their hands and neck, which previously needed waivers.
The Army and its sister services have scrambled this year, offering increasingly generous benefits and policy tweaks in an effort to improve recruiting numbers. The Army has hit 40% of its recruiting goals this year, with the struggle to fill the ranks seemingly so grim the Defense Department reduced its planned total force size because prior recruiting goals were out of reach.

Hum....My GT score when I enlisted was 116. I think at the time the max on that GT test score was 125. I was told back then to enlist that score needed to be above 90. But when I got to AIT I met guys from the South and inner cities like Chicago, Baltimore and Philadelphia that had GT scores below 70. That was in 1975. I always wondered if the scoring was adjusted for geographical areas based on education and social environment?
You don’t need no ejamacation going to da Russian meat grinder!
Don’t forget gay, all new recruits must be fruits!
I only scored a 95 😔
Still qualifies for every job.
I had to take an additional test called EDPT.
We will know things are bad only when... they have a firm requirement for white males.
Currently, they will fill the gaps with anyone willing to enlist. Fat, check. Mentally Ill, check. Racists, check and move to the head of the class. Female in Special Operations, check. Female in Infantry, not a priority because only great Infantry soldiers become qualified Special Operators.
I joined foregoing my Junior year in 1974 and came out with a Masters Degree and two BAs, as a First Sergeant waiting on Sergant Major but with what I had going on, why would risk everything I worked 20 years to achieve to be destroyed with one AH SH*T - a thousand attaboys would not save anyone; the Army by 1994 under Clinton was involved in Bosnia illegally at the time and many of US ARMY - Uncle Sam Ain’t Relesed Me Yet, saw the politicalization in the upper ranks.
That was when Hillary lied about almost being killed in Yugosalvia by a sniper (a good fried of mine was the CSM in the air and on the ground with her entrouge and he said it was a lie - what she really said was, “I am gonna fuck all these people personally when we are President, nobody tells me to wear a helmet.”
The entire US Army is currently built upon competence, starting at the lowest pay grades and ranks. By the time you an E3 you are considered competent. Show some leadership (or have a family to feed) you make E4. Did you notice people get promoted to a position to feed their family while others for competence? That is the crux of brining in families at the lowest pay grades. Of course it is the Hook to keep then 20 years too because they can not afford to get out and maintain their standard of living after 3 years.
The officer ranks suffer from being filled with college grad’s. The Military needs to start training it’s own officer corps and it needs to take kids out of High School into 5-6 new service academies that are not West Point, Annapolis or a mile high. These schools need to focus on God and Country allowing everyone to know a morale and just group of people protect the nation from itself.
This is actually from 2022. January is a little early to say the Army is at 40 percent of their recruiting goal for the year.
Similar experience. With a GT score over 115, you were treated like an officer by the officers one on one. Maybe they too were intimidated by the rare individual, say one out of 50 with those scores.
Army is build on a competent fire team of four-five guys. Two fire teams consisting of 9 personnel, one the squad leader can perform all military and first aid tasks. Four squads make a platoon. Every three platoons is supported by four squads in weapons platoon built around three mortors, some light anti-tank. If these 16 squads function, a US Army Infantry company could have held the center during Pickett’s charge.
Today’s Army is build around substandard non-performing individuals rather than teams. The elites do not understand the small elite force they inhereted will actually need to be replaced by 2-3 times the numbers of Woke recruits.
In the old Army a leader spend 90 percent of his time on 10 percent of his soldiers, and 10 percent on good ones. When all your soldiers are problem people, you will never achieve the competency required by the current small force.
The answer is not more people without English or basic educations. It is training the force.
Our elites DO NOT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THE USA. THEY ARE GOING TO DESTROY THIS NATION FIRST AND FOREMOST.
Army taking what ever they can get not going to pay off.
FR posters still pushing for war as well.
Now they get participation diplomas when they all “graduate” as one big “democrazy” mob full of “valedictorians.” You used to have to be a “Hispanic single mom” to be a “valedictorian”, now everyone is one.
At a time when a HS diploma means less than it did 30 years ago.
Private Zero reporting.
As long as the ASVAB still controls what MOS they can get into, don’t have a problem with this. There are plenty that have a diploma that is meaningless anyway that get in.
The Feddies are trying to confiscate AR-15s and all semi-automatic rifles from normal, law abiding Americans and will be giving these high school dropouts M-4 Carbines, M-5 rifles and M-249 and M250 light machine guns. Sounds to me like the liberals’ favorite “mass shootings” will be moving from elementary schools to military barracks.
“I had to deal with the post-Vietnam Cat IV issue back in the day.”
Ditto - mine was a clear recruitment violation with the recruiter providing ASVAB answers. Somehow, the guy made it through Basic/AIT as a Field Wireman but couldn’t stand up to the work in the unit, even basic soldier skills on keeping his room straight.
just making room for new infantry ...who will follow the UniParty orders to turn on flyover country when ordered
no accident this correlates with the revolution starting in Texas this week
Why else the massive amount of illegal males being allowed in? Planned War. Our military shortage is appalling, ….the planned use of illegals inducted to our military solves two of Biden’s obstacles-it replenishes our military for war, and insures these troops will have no reservations firing upon US citizens should they be called upon to quell the huge civil unrest ( and rebellion) that is coming.
Let’s hope Abbot, and now the 24 states supporting him will not back down, will mobilize their NG and law enforcement AGAINST any Federally ordered troops or .gov agencies ordered into those States.
Civil War on the horizon? To early to tell, but a certainty if blood will be spilled.
Good to see Texas finally leading the charge against senile Joe, my friends from Texas all support his actions, up to and including the use of arms.
In 1964 I dropped out of High School (at 17) and joined the Army (parents gave consent). Ended up as an Infantryman in Vietnam. Perhaps they knew something I didn’t know (LOL).
