Taiwan Casts Its Lot with Freedom

Taiwan just pushed back against bully China’s threats and elected a pro-Western, pro-sovereignty candidate to be president of the island nation.

William Lai Ching-te, the current Vice President of Taiwan and candidate of the Democratic Progressive Party defeated his rivals from the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP). He won the election handily, as by 8 p.m. Taipei time, Lai had garnered 40% of the vote. His closest competitor, Hou Yu-ih, candidate of the KMT and mayor of New Taipei, lagged behind with 33%.

Moreover, Lai’s predecessor, current President Tsai Ing-Wen enjoyed eight years as leader of Taiwan, so it appears the Taiwanese strongly approve of the party’s leadership. The DPP has stood for continued independence and firmness against Chinese aggression.

Needless to say, Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party do not approve of the election.

What? How do they have results already? The vote was only a day ago.

Apparently they run their elections better than we run ours.

ALL THREE Taiwan candidates were pro-western, pro-sovereignty, and even pro-American. They differed within a relatively narrow range, in how to approach China and what words/themes they would use in their relations and how to describe themselves.

Note that the winner only rec’d 40% of the vote. Even less than Bill Clinton in 1992

Polls of Taiwan voters show they were more concerned about economic and social-welfare issues on the island, vs. China

This is a reductionist, and overly simplified article that lacks any real insight to anyone who cares about details

Taiwan has no absentee ballots. They clean their voter rolls regularly to remove "ghosts" and errors. People receive advance notices and are assigned to ONE polling place. There is no "walk up" registration or voting. Counting is done in full public view.

Many Taiwanese still remember martial under the KMT, a few remember having to flee from the Communists and know stories of how their relatives suffered on the Mainland, and many visit or do business in China, so have a very good comparison of political systems.

They do not put up with electoral bullshit and fakery like Americans do.

China can’t even win a border skirmish with India without getting its azz kicked. 🙄

I know your being facetious. And you’re right be be.

But it’s an immediate count, in the open, each ballot held up, shown to everyone, candidate is named out loud, they tally the vote.

Less than four hours it’s all counted.

It underscores how corrupt we are here.

“Apparently they run their elections better than we run ours.”

Everybody runs their elections better than we run ours. Even the worst dictatorships.
