ALL THREE Taiwan candidates were pro-western, pro-sovereignty, and even pro-American. They differed within a relatively narrow range, in how to approach China and what words/themes they would use in their relations and how to describe themselves.

Note that the winner only rec’d 40% of the vote. Even less than Bill Clinton in 1992

Polls of Taiwan voters show they were more concerned about economic and social-welfare issues on the island, vs. China

This is a reductionist, and overly simplified article that lacks any real insight to anyone who cares about details
