Someone with a dirtier mind than me needs to explain Shtoopgate. Why is it called such?

What led to the increased usage of "schtupping"?

Not sure why it was spelled incorrectly, and the gate part dates back to Watergate.

Others have explained the definition of "shtooping/schtooping." While in general usage it means, "having sex with," I've usually heard it used in the context of it being, "having ill-advised sex with," based on power differentials, highly inappropriate relationships, i.e.:

"The sergeant was caught schtuping one of his privates," or, "That guy got thrown out of his fraternity for schtuping another guy's girlfriend."

Mind you, I'm not the arbiter of such things, but that's generally the context in which I've heard the term used.
