Forget Our NBC Poll! Scarborough Yawns Past Biden's Bad Polling Graveyard

From the Our Polls Don't Mean Anything Department:

Mika Brzezinski: "New polling from NBC News has Donald Trump ahead of President Biden by two points, 46% to 44%."

Joe Scarborough: "Excuse me one second, I've got to yawn [makes yawning sound.]"

That was Joe Scarborough on today's Morning Joe, feigning insouciance in reaction to the latest bad polling news for Joe Biden.

How desperate was Scarborough to make the case that Biden, who today turns 81, is not too old to be president? Scarborough actually pointed to Warren Buffett, who at 93 is still an investing whiz.

Here's the difference, Joe -- Buffett continues his lifetime of investing success. The only notable money-making move that Biden, aka The Big Guy, has apparently ever made was to trade on his official position for a piece of Hunter's influence-peddling action.

he is both right and hoping he is wrong on this.

Technically polling this far out wouldn’t be very helpful to what will happen next November.

BUT

This is not like any other election ever polled. This election featured TWO incumbents!

Americans already know how BOTH people would perform as president. There are no unknowns here. And the American public has made up their minds on who did a better job.

Here are the poll results:

Demographics (1,000 registered voters with 3.1% MOE):

Analysis: This is a D+1 poll. This poll underweights Independents. It exaggerates the results towards the party bases.

Also, the results are not split out by party identification.

Q: Thinking about your general approach to issues, do you consider yourself to be liberal, moderate, or conservative?

ResponseAll
Very/Somewhat Liberal28%
Moderate32%
Very/Somewhat Conservative37%

Q: In general, do you approve or disapprove of the job Joe Biden is doing as president?

ResponseAll
Approve40%
Disapprove57%

Q: Please tell me if you approve or disapprove of President Biden’s handling of each of the following:

ResponseApproveDisapprove
The Economy38%59%
Foreign Policy33%62%
Israel-Hamas War34%56%

Analysis: Although Biden's overall approval matches the Democrat party weighting of this poll, on the top issues Biden is losing base support.

Q: If the election for president were held today, with a Republican candidate and Joe Biden as the Democratic candidate, for whom would you vote?

ResponseAll
Republican48%
Joe Biden37%

Q: If the election for president were held today, with Donald Trump as the Republican candidate and a Democratic candidate, for whom would you vote?

ResponseAll
Donald Trump40%
Democrat46%

Analysis: When each candidate is matched against an unnamed candidate of the other party, both Trump and Biden lose to the unnamed candidate. However, Trump gains +1 over his base when named while Biden loses -3 from his base when named.

Q: Now I'm going to read you the names of several public figures, groups, and places and I'd like you to rate your feelings toward each one as very positive, somewhat positive, neutral, somewhat negative, or very negative.

ResponseVery Positive/PositiveNeutralVery Negative/NegativeDon't Know/Not Sure
Joe Biden36%10%53%1%
Donald Trump36%11%52%1%
Kamela Harris29%16%52%3%
Ron DeSantis27%17%47%9%
Nikki Haley24%22%28%26%
Mike Johnson14%20%23%43%
Israel47%27%24%2%
Palestine20%37%38%5%
Hamas1%11%79%7%
Russia3%18%77%2%
Ukraine45%29%24%2%

Analysis: Regarding the top candidates, Biden's and Trump's favorability is reflective of the poll's party overweight. Harris is clearly disliked in her own party as she polls -7 below Biden.

Regarding the Republican challengers, DeSantis is in Harris territory while the public hasn't made up its mind on Nikki Haley.

Regarding the nations at war, the public has clearly taken the sides of Israel and Ukraine. Hamas and Russia are both hated.

Q: Asked of Republican primary voters: If the Republican primary for president were being held today, which one of the following candidates would you favor? And, which of the following candidates would be your second choice?

Response1st Choice2nd ChoiceCombined Choice
Donald Trump58%13%71%
Ron DeSantis18%36%54%
Nikki Haley13%15%28%
Vivek Ramaswamy3%12%15%
Chris Christie3%7%10%

Analysis: There are no surprises here. Based on the prior question, Haley unknowns can make up the difference between her and DeSantis, but nobody has a chance to catch up with Trump.

Q: If the election for president were held today, with Donald Trump as the Republican candidate and Joe Biden as the Democratic candidate, for whom would you vote?

ResponseAll
Donald Trump46%
Joe Biden44%
Neither7%

Analysis: Each candidate exceeds his base support, but Trump's exceeds the Republican weight by +7 while Biden exceeds the Democrat weight by +4.

Q: Asked of Biden voters: Would you say your vote is more FOR Joe Biden or more AGAINST Donald Trump?

ResponseAll
For Joe Biden31%
Against Donald Trump63%

Q: Asked of Trump voters: Would you say your vote is more FOR Donald Trump or more AGAINST Joe Biden?

ResponseAll
For Donald Trump56%
Against Joe Biden37%

Analysis: Not surprisingly, Democrats rabidly hate Donald Trump compared to the Republican dislike of Joe Biden. Trump leads with voters who are motivated to support a candidate.

Q: What is your preference for the outcome of the Congressional elections in November of 2024 -- (ROTATE:) a Congress controlled by Republicans or a Congress controlled by Democrats?

ResponseAll
Republican-controlled47%
Democrat-controlled45%
Not Sure8%

Analysis: Control of Congress mirrors the Trump-Biden match-up. This suggests that the voters no longer want an opposition Congress if Trump wins the election.

CONCLUSION:

Given that this poll underweights Independents and does not break out results by party identification, it still looks like voters are tilting towards Republicans at this time.

There are none so blind as Joe S who cannot see the distinction w/ a difference:
<><>Buffett continues his lifetime of BUYING stock.....adding to his trading success.
<><>Biden SOLD OUT his elected office....traded for 10% of Hunter’s influence-peddling deals.

A couple days ago, Joe was getting weepy with admiration for videos of Joe Biden, who was walking around with Chairman Xi, and pointing at things.
