Between September 29 and September 30 in 1941, the Nazis, specifically Einsatzgruppe C, shot some 34,000 Jewish people at Babi Yar, a ravine outside of the Ukrainian city of Kiev.
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum gives a suspiciously specific death count of 33,771. This is considered the single largest mass murder of World War II, and for Kiev it was just the beginning.
In the days prior to the massacre the Nazis put up posters around the city reading:
Kikes of the city of Kiev and vicinity! On Monday, September 29, you are to appear by 08:00 a.m. with your possessions, money, documents, valuables, and warm clothing at Dorogozhitskaya Street, next to the Jewish cemetery. Failure to appear is punishable by death.
The Jews believed they were being resettled. They had no knowledge of Nazi atrocities, as the Soviet press had supressed such accounts. By the thousands they arrived at the cemetery with their belongings, expecting to be loaded onto trains.....

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday visited the site of the Babyn Yar massacre to mark the 82nd anniversary of one of the largest mass murders of Jews in the Holocaust.
Zelensky placed a candle at the historic site and said Ukraine would "never" forget the tragedy perpetrated by Nazi Germany.
Most of the German commanders who were involved in this massacre paid for their crimes.

However, it really bothers me that so many Nazi war criminals got off so easily. Take Admiral Eric Raeder, for example. At Nuremberg, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. Yet they released him after 10 years.
That’s pathetic, and an insult to the many victims of the Nazis.

The job of these collaborating Ukrainians was to aid German troops in various operations, such as fighting the Soviet Partisans. Later, they escorted Jews to their forced labor sites and guarded the ghettos. In those capacities, the Ukrainians stole from the Jews, harassed them, and often shot Jews at random. When the Germans began liquidating the ghettos of the Ukraine, the notoriously brutal Ukrainian policemen participated in those aktionen. They besieged the ghettos in order to prevent any escapes, searched for Jews who had gone into hiding, and chased down those who had managed to get away. They also accompanied the Jews to their executions, killed thousands of Jews who did not walk to their deaths fast enough, and guarded the execution sites so no one could get in or out. In mid-1943 many Ukrainians abandoned the police to join the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. I agree in general, but actually curious about your example of Raeder. What did he do that was so bad? My sense was that the German Navy, the Kriegsmarine, was generally much less complicit in war crimes and crimes against humanity than the Luftwaffe or the Wermacht but I am not an expert here.

Then he got up on a Leopard tank with a German cross on it and said, “Thanks for the tanks!”
At Nuremberg, Admiral Raeder was convicted of:
(1) conspiracy to commit crimes against peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity
(2) planning, initiating, and waging wars of aggression
(3) crimes against the laws of war
In 1939 Hitler invaded Poland, using a flimsy and obviously phony excuse. Admiral Raeder could have quietly resigned and blamed it on age. But instead he thought the whole thing was just great.
His excuse was that he was just a soldier following orders. But he was a Grand Admiral, not some ensign. Raeder was willingly a part of the Nazi death machine. He should have paid more than he did.

Yes a very messy history. Such as Russia collaboration with Nazi Germany in the rape of Poland. Or the Holdamor, the Russian force starvation of 5 million Ukrainians. or the collaboration of Russians in the murder of 2.8 million Jews in the Soviet Union
