The Prince says the festival is now 'just about wearing a costume to get drunk in'
he Prince of Bavaria complained about the effect 'cultural appropriation' has had on Oktoberfest, bemoaning the fact that the annual German festival is 'just about wearing a costume to get drunk in.'
While speaking to a local radio station, Luitpold Rupprecht Heinrich said that the focus on spectacle has caused Oktoberfest to lose its way.
"When I see Chinese-made folk costumes made of plastic, pseudo-costumes with tight dirndls, then the whole thing becomes a carnival," Heinrich said, per the Daily Mail. "We all talk about cultural appropriation today. Here it's happening to us Bavarians!"
The great-grandson of the last Bavarian king is not alone in his concerns about how Oktoberfest has changed. Many traditionalists feel what is supposed to be a celebration of Bavarian culture has now become an excuse to dress up and drink.
"If the whole thing is just about wearing a costume to get drunk in...you lose a lot of culture and tradition in the process," Heinrich said.
The first-ever Oktoberfest in 1810 was a celebration of the wedding between Prince Regent Ludwig of Bavaria, the later King Ludwig I, and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen.
Had the same thought.
So many of the European elite look back a bit too fondly of their times in boarding school getting bent over by upper class man.
Pretty sure that’s why King Charles loves the Arabs so much. He had his own Lawrence of Arabia dalliances.
Hey Prince...be glad so many come to quaff your culture...now pass me a Spaten!
Is calling for us all to first present a Bavarier-Nachweis before bellying up to the bar?
Regards,
It’s the third time today the dad lost the kid.
Back in the 80s in a 10-day ski trip to Innsbruck we had to stay the night in Munich as the bus to the resort wasn’t leaving until the next morning. We took the opportunity to tour around including a fantastic beer haus. As mentioned the second floor was a beautiful huge room with what seemed like a hundred mostly round tables that seated 10-12 people each. And of course the waitresses wore the typical costumes which put their ‘bumpers’ on display. The beer was strong and plentiful. We had a great time!
Who can forget the dancing scene from National Lampoon’s “European Vacation”?

because nothing grows in the shade...
If someone is willing to dress like this, I am more than willing to look.
This “Prince of Bavaria” is no more a prince than I am. You cannot just give yourself a royal title. It has to be recognized by the government. In 1918 Germany abolished royal titles. Therefore, there are no Bavarian princes.
We see the same sort of thing with French dukes and Italian counts. It’s silly. But I guess some “commoners” are so drawn to “royalty” that they keep the charade going.
I’m just hear to read the article...honest.
This one just jumped to the top of my favorite meme list. ROTFL. Don’t anyone let a liberal USA Today fact checker near it!
When has it been anything else?!
You didn't pinky swear. I don't believe you. j/k
If I spent too much time lookng at cleavage; it wouldn't be any bows getting tied in a knot!
But is it really “cultural appropriation” if your own people are doing it to their own traditions? Maybe that’s a sign that everything is “cultural appropriation.” The line between handing down traditions and appropriating them isn’t always so clear.
And weren’t “clevage bearing dresses” common at various times in European history? In Napoleonic France, for example? Maybe in “Merry Old England” (whenever that was)?
Anyway, it’s nice to hear from the rightful King of England (if that’s who this guy is).
Hey Prince, go to You Tube and check out the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Some are hereditary.
Some pass by ownership of land.
Europeans reflexively genuflect at titles
Like Germans are the only ones that have tits.
