In her post on social media, a thirty-six-year-old woman wrote about her experience flying back from Thanksgiving weekend at her parents. As a plus-sized woman, the Original Poster (OP) was accustomed to booking more than one seat on most public transportation.
For her early morning flight back home, she spent extra money and booked two adjacent seats “so whoever had the third seat in [her] row would not have to be squished up in [her] business.”....
A gentleman approached and tried to sit his pre-teen daughter in the “empty” middle seat—where OP said that her “bum was taking up a good third of the space.”
She politely informed the man that the seat was booked and therefore his daughter couldn’t sit there. She put her hand on the other two-thirds of the seat for emphasis.
The man immediately complained. He vented to OP that he hadn’t been able to book seats together and that he needed to sit with his daughter. OP merely shrugged and said she was sorry, but “it wasn’t [her] problem, [and] that wasn’t his seat.”
The stewardess left to track down a passenger willing to trade. She returned ten minutes later with a female passenger. The woman, one half of a married couple willing to trade seats, called OP selfish. She made sure to shame OP for not helping “a dad in need.”
OP did not balk at the insult. She told the woman, “I booked early, and I booked two seats together because, to put it plainly, I’m fat. His two seats were separate seats. How exactly do you propose I split my fat a** in half to sit one half in one seat and the other half in his other seat?”

Many times on FR I have seen comments about fatties needed 2 seats, this woman did right by booking 2 seats.
Have to wonder how you would book 2 seats? A passenger's name is normally required. Maybe you can put the same passenger's name in for each seat.
She did the right thing and is in the right.
One of the worst things about modern American society is the raging sense of entitlement that far too many people have.
L
Good question.
"...to put it plainly, I’m fat. His two seats were separate seats. How exactly do you propose I split my fat a** in half"
If she bought two seats, what’s the problem?
Agree. She did the right thing, bur THEY had no right to complain or fat shame. SHE PAID FOR TWO TICKETS. She could have put anything in that seat if she so chose.
The dad was selfish and acting entitled.
She probably just had to explain that they were both for her due to circumstances.
She paid for that extra seat.
She’s in the right here.
Yep.....she payed for 2 seats......they belong to her.
The accuser of the brethren, stirring the pot. No more simpering Christians- watch the demons scream as they flee.
You just talk to the airline. I had a friend always booked a seat for his guitar so that he did not have to check it.
The headline seems a little misleading, or maybe I misread it at first. But yes, she certainly did the right thing.
Had to go through Chicago O'Hare airport a couple weeks ago.
As usual, the TSA line was very long and snaked through the terminal. It was at least 45 minutes to get to the gates.
I can't count how many entitled Americans pushed through the long line, saying: "I'm late for my flight!" But it wasn't just Americans - Chicago also seems to be a hub for immigrants, who push through without saying even a "sorry" at all.
It got out of hand, and finally a TSA dominatrix picked two central American guys out of the line and gave them a loud, public dressing down, telling them to arrive to the airport early, like everyone else. They couldn't understand a word she was saying, but it was enjoyable for the rest of us.
All airlines have some policy regarding such "plus-sized" passengers.
Options are trying to shove 300 lbs into a 17" seat ... not pleasant on a full flight, for the pax or their seatmates.
So the idea of booking two seats together, as this lady did, is the proper way to fly on todays' crowded flights. From Southwest:
Customer of size and extra seat policy
In the "Passengers" field, indicate the total number of seats needed by selecting that number of adults. (For example, if one Customer of size requires two seats and is traveling with one other adult in their party, select "3 Adults.")
Proceed through the "Select Flight" and "Itinerary and Pricing" pages.
Complete the "Who's Flying?" name fields for a Customer of size as follows:
Without a middle name: A Passenger named Tom Smith would designate Passenger One as "Tom Smith," and Passenger Two as "Tom XS Smith" (first name Tom, middle name XS, and last name Smith).
With a middle name: A Passenger named Tom James Smith would designate Passenger One as "Tom James Smith," and Passenger Two as "Tom James XS Smith" (first name Tom, middle name James XS, and last name Smith).
She paid for 2 seats?
Those her seats.
Smart, I wonder how many people do the right thing.
She is totally in the right.
So true.....all entitlement and little responsibility.
this woman is 100% correct. People need to plan, and to pay to sit together. Or drive. then you are in control.
