30,000 Pilot Shortage + Union Demands Will Make Flying Unaffordable.

Flying in the United States is set to become unaffordable for normal Americans with a combination of severe pilot shortages and increasingly-demanding pilot unions causing ticket prices to soar.

It is estimated that airlines across North America will suffer shortages of around 30,000 pilots over the next decades, as the U.S. is failing to train enough, with others opting to retire early.

“The supply of new pilots will grow, but not enough to offset a continuing wave of retirements,” states the management consulting firm, Oliver Wyman.

The planes will be flown remotely from the ground - like drones today - with one actual pilot handling twenty of them at a time and a diversity coordinator standing over his shoulder to make sure his planes don’t take racist flight paths over disadvantaged neighborhoods. /s

Being spread out over 200+ passengers for a few hours, the employee salaries are tiny part of the cost.

Look at the taxes (landing/takeoff fees) that consume half the ticket price. After 9/11 the government tacked the cost of all those TSA drones.

Yes, but why would anyone need to leave their 15-minute ghetto?

It’s not cheap to qualify as an airline pilot and it takes years to get the required experience. (https://www.thepilotguys.com/blog/airline-pilot-salary) The Air Force is an alternative option.

The airlines joined with Pfascist korporations and corrupt government to force the Jim Jones Jab on pilots.

What fool would stick around when an adverse reaction to the shot could end their career if not their life?

What fool enter such a narrow career track where a future employer could again force pilots to choose between their livelihood or their health?

Imagine being fifteen years down a career path that has no value in other fields and having your boss tell you "agree to this chemical rape or leave". The only way to win is not to get in that situation.

Fuel costs are important as jet fuel costs about twice the price of regular gasoline. I once heard that it costs a 747 over $4000 in fuel costs to make a 180 degree turn.

My last commercial flight for my employer occurred in Sept 2017. I had many years when I traveled by plane every 2 weeks to destinations in the US and Europe. It stopped being enjoyable by 2005. The bright side is that my employer is much less likely to summon me for an in person visit when working remotely with high speed networking is much more cost effective than flying with the same laptop to work in person.

Well, just a wild guess, but could that be a big part of the problem?

Why wouldn't the airlines train and hire their own pilots? They have the expertise, the equipment etc. And then once trained and hired, they could slowly pay the airlines back, say 10% of what they earn goes back to the airline.

This isn't complex.

Start up high school vo-tech flight schools in lieu of sending everyone to college for worthless degrees.

The aviation industry is built on taxpayers paying the bills. Everything from the land, the aircraft, the terminals, the safety oversight, pilot training (for ex-military), etc. is all paid for by the taxpayers.

Then I guess it’s better to not have any pilots to fly their aircraft.

The cost of civilian pilot training is horribly expensive. It costs over $80,000 on upwards to go from private, instrument, commercial, instructor (optional), dual engine and ATP. The problem is that a pilot will incur tons of debt and be paid only $50,000 a year until they build up enough hours (1,500) to be eligible to be hired by airlines.

Knowing the Paul Ryan type of Republicans, they will just H1-N1 foreigners into our country.

They’ll get their pilots, even if they hire incompetent ones, from overseas if necessary.
