This is such a wonderful time in a kitten’s life. When tiny kitties begin gnawing my fingers with their needle-sharp teeth, I gently substitute their own tail in place of my finger. It breaks the habit quickly.

"My husband Nick and my cat Carrot are always fighting for dominance in the house. All windows in house are accessible to Carrot but we keep the shutters in the living room closed so the dogs don’t bark at everything they see. In the video, you see Carrot opening the shutters to birdwatch. Nick quickly closes them, Carrot is not going to have it,so he continuously opens them back up, while my husband continues to close them, calling him a bastard. Finally, after Carrot throws out a spiteful death stare at my husband Nick, he once more opens the shutters, then goes to open a second set of shutters, knowing that my husband cannot reach this set of shutters. 1 point for Carrot, 0 for dad."

My Maine Coon Dandi does the same thing. She taught herself how to open my plantation shutters. I finally devised a way to prevent this (she has the very top ones open for her viewing pleasure) by using white velcro on the louvers. It worked like a charm. If I fail to close the shutters tightly enough to engage the velcro, I WILL find them open, courtesy of Dandi. Devil girl!

We just adopted a kitten a few days ago. He is just the sweetest, friendliest, affectionate and funniest kitten ever and he’s already pretty much made himself at home, sleeping next to my wife all night from the second day home. He and our other, grown, cat are still in the process of getting to know each other.

The trouble with a kitten is that
It soon grows up to be a cat.
-— Ogden Nash

I’d like to get another kitten every year or so, but then we’d end up with 15 or 20 cats instead of the current five. They all stay indoors because of coyotes, hawks, and owls.

Your older cat will eventually learn to tolerate the kitten. We got a pair of male kittens about a year and a half ago, and I was a bit worried that our 2 1/2-year-old tom might harm them. Not a chance. He was delighted to have them to play with, and they absolutely hero-worshipped him.

As much as would love to have a bunch of cats (my wife could easily be a Cat Lady), we decided to limit ourselves to two at a time, just enough to keep each other company.

Same here. Here in Arizona it would be insane to have an outdoor cat, even in the suburbs.

Yeah, we've been through this a few times. Our beloved orange tabby male just passed recently (after 16 years) and our older she-cat is about 3 1/2 years old. Eventually they'll be best buds for a long time.

Same with my wife. She’d rescue them all if she could. I’m doing well to be holding it at five.
