On June 6, an eleven-year-old boy, Ethan Vogel, was biking with his father in Golden, Colorado, when he clipped a boulder, fell off the bicycle, and landed on a 30-plus inch prairie rattlesnake that bit him in the torso near his armpit. The horrific incident occurred approximately ninety minutes into the evening ride.

Those damn snakes cause lasting damage.
I tend to make hat bands out of them
He also packed a snakebite kit just in case as we were more than 20 minutes from first responders even if cell phones were ubiquitous back then, which they weren't.
Was the boy 90 minutes ride from help or a phone call for search and rescue? Speed is important when bit.
Poor kid. Of all places to fall and land. I don’t know much abt snakes, but I’m guessing the rattler can bite and keep his fangs intact. He must have just slithered away into the nearest burrow.
Looking at the hospital bed pic, the boy is fortunate in that if you just have to get snake bit in the upper torso, let it be on your right side. If he were bitten on the left of the sternum, that would be right over the heart muscle, making cardiac problems all the more likely.
Thx for this story, James L.
Always carry activated charcoal and water and make a poultice it will suck out some of the venom.
We have a ranch house that is infested with them. We’ve been on a crusade to kill all the rodents so they have nothing to eat but that’s the only source of water for many many miles so everything comes there. We’ve him only killed three this year.
Last fall the 22-yr old son of a friend stepped on a rattlesnake in front yard in the dark. He just had flipflops on and the snake got him in the foot. He was taken to the local hospital and then air lifted to a hospital in Lubbock. He was given 14 vials of anti-venom and spent a couple of days in ICU. Was on crutches for about six weeks but didn’t lose much muscle and now is fine.
Rattlesnakes are funny about people falling on them.... I love the line, “God heard Zach’s prayer and kept his son alive....” I believe that strongly!
Those damn snakes cause lasting damage.
Like bad politicians...
I’m glad he at least survived. It could have been a lot worse.

Waste of money:
Speed is important when bit.
Amen to that.
I’m allergic to Yellow Jacket stings. Last July, I got bit by “something” while mowing the lawn. I told my wife & son to be on alert. The bottom of my feet started itching & I told my son to take me to the Urgent Care center. I passed out on the way and ended up at a hospital about 5 miles away. My Epi pens were expired...afraid to go outside for weeks. Time is indeed critical.
But more people injured and killed themselves with the little razor than did any good. Later, it was advised to simply transport the victim to the nearest medical center rather than slicing your skin close to an artery, or some such.
I vaguely recall having a kit like that in the Boy Scouts back in the 1970s.
I’m sure you did. It was a wilderness staple throughout the 60s and 70s.
His companions couldn't believe what a good shot he was. He never told them it was snake shot.
Sounds like you had quite a close call! I glad you’re ok!
quite a close call!
Fer sure.
The funny thing is, my EX wife was with me the 1st time this happened. My whole body swelled up like the Elephant Man. I thought it was from Poison Ivy. About 20 minutes into treatment, it all went away. The doctor said, I’m going to give you a prescription for an Epi Pen. My EX wife said, Oh, he doesn’t need that...
This episode explained many things...
