NBC’s Chuck Todd dedicated the entire hour of Meet the Press on Sunday to bemoaning how the Supreme Court has turned into a partisan body....
After whining about how the Supreme Court has turned more conservative and partisan, Todd informed his audience of a “stunning fact.” This so-called fact was that “the last time a Republican-controlled United States Senate confirmed a Democratic President's Supreme Court nominee: Grover Cleveland administration nearly 130 years ago.”
In reality, there have been 28 appointees by Democratic Presidents since Cleveland had his last nominee confirmed in 1895, and since then all but one have been appointed and confirmed with Democrats in the majority in the United States Senate.
The only time since 1895 that a Democratic President appointed someone to the Supreme Court while Republicans controlled the Senate was in 2016 during an election year, which was in violation of the Biden rule.

“... which was in violation of the Biden rule.”
Boo hoo.
Clearly the Democrats have had control of the Senate and White House too many years.
Man we could use Grover Cleveland now!
Shut up, traitor.
I thought SCOTUS was supposed to be apolitical and to uphold the constitution.
And that’s bad because, ...?
I’m a Benjamin Harrison guy myself
While Todd’s statement is untrue...
the fact should be that...
no democrat nominee should make it to the Supreme Court...
because democrats send nominees such sa Garrick Merlant for confirmation.
Republicans did exactly the right thing by refusing Garland’s nomination, as witnessed by how horrible he’s been as the head of the DOJ.
All three women on fhe Supreme Court now are there not because of merit, but because they are women and/or of a minority.
If merit were to be considered over “D.E.I”, democrats would nobody in SCOTUS.
I’m a Benjamin Harrison guy myself
Benjamin Harrison was a huge big Government Guy, “The Billion Dollar Congress.” Cleveland was a Jacksonian Democrat.
Misleading. Since there has been only one SCOTUS vacancy (Scalia) when there was a Democrat president and a Republican Senate.
Wilson - Democrat control of Senate from 1913-1919, no SCOTUS vacancies in last two years of administration
Roosevelt - no Republican control of Senate
Truman - Republican control of Senate from 1947-1947 - no SCOTUS vacancies
Kennedy - no Republican control of Senate
Johnson - no Republican control of Senate
Carter - no Republican control of Senate
Clinton - Republican control from 1995-2001 - 2 vacancies in 1993 and 1994; no vacancies until 2005
Obama - Republican control of Senate from 2015-2017 - 2 vacancies in 2009 and 2010; Scalia dies in 2016
Biden - no Republican control of Senate
So TOTALLY misleading!!
The Republican Senate in 2016 didn’t confirm Garland. So what! Whoopdeedoo!
The Democrats made it partisan. Ted Kennedy’s legacy.
Kennedy at least appointed Byron White.
It's not the media, it's Leftist activism.
Good for the Republicans. The other issue is that between Cleveland and FDR, there was only 1 other Dem President (Wilson). During and after FDR, Dems controlled the Senate many more times than Republicans. So the opportunity was simply not there.
LOL. Cleveland appointed Edward Douglass White, who was a Confederate soldier and KKK member. He was a hardcore racist who voted in favor of Plessy. Is that what Chuck wants on the court?
It’s also that the judges don’t want to retire when the stars don’t align. It’s not like this is se random sampling.
“LOL. Cleveland appointed Edward Douglass White, who was a Confederate soldier and KKK member. He was a hardcore racist who voted in favor of Plessy. Is that what Chuck wants on the court?”
And to add to your point, William Howard Taft and the Republican Senate ELEVATED White to be Chief Justice in 1910.
So a GOP Senate confirmed a Democrat-appointed justice to Chief. But since a Republican nominated White to be chief, that doesn’t count to Todd.
And of course Taft succeeded his own Chief appointee White in 1921.
