Fleet Week Los Angeles
Me | 5/29/2023 | Married21

Just wanted to report in after seeing Fleet Week Los Angeles, held dockside in San Pedro. I helped out a tiny bit, handing out maps and schedules to visitors. I just wanted to report that patriotism is alive and well, where you may not expect it. All kinds of Angeleños showed up, wearing tshirts about military service, patriotism, God, faith and family. Many young families, service men and women, police, community volunteers, veterans. I did see one Black Lives Matter ball cap, but also saw a first: “dare to be Lutheran” on a tshirt. Most poignant: a woman came up to me because she noticed that I stopped and put my hand over my heart when an entertainment group did the Star Spangled Banner. She told me she was here in honor of her son, who had died in Afghanistan twelve years ago today. She was working at the Gold Star Mothers booth. Well, today honors her son, and all who gave all. Just wanted to report that, despite our daily deluge of disappointing news, there is still American spirit persisting in Los Angeles CA.

Good work. Negativity does its best to crowd out the good that still exists in the world. Your effort made a difference. Thank you.

“If they voted demonrat they are still traitors.”

Tell me about it. I know people who served and fought for this country...just to come home and empower Leftists. They cannot seem to get the point that patriotism extends beyond the day that they hang up the uniform.

“Just an eye witness report of actual patriotism in CA.” 100% for sure. I went to the local cemetery in So Cal this morning, 10am, for a Memorial Day event. Two thousand patriots showed up: flags, motorcycles, prayers, and respect Both men and women wearing red white and blue. Very nice. Patriotic and normal.

Late to the thread, but this was yesterday in Depoe Bay, OR. Very moving and very patriotic.

It was beautiful, a lot of people were misty-eyed.

I was a bit surprised this last Sunday when at the end of the service @ my wife’s church (she’s Catholic, I’m Missouri Synod Lutheran), the Associate Priest (Head Priest was on vacation) not only said a special prayer in thanks to deceased and other US military personnel for their service and sacrifice, then an Elder came out carrying a big US flag in a sort of Honor Guard fashion, the organ began to crank out The Star Spangled Banner (sounded really good!) and we all sang along. Heartily.

The Elder with the flag then stayed up front for the priest to give the closing prayer and Benediction, and then exited slightly in front of the priest exiting (as usual, down the center aisle).

Yes, I had a little bit of a lump in my throat and a slight tear in my eye as our flag exited, passing me. :-)

That sounds really heartwarming. And, as a former organist, I approve of pulling out all the stops, so to speak, on the Star Spangled Banner.
