In a development straight out of a dystopian sci-fi thriller, fast food giant Wendy’s has embarked on a chilling experiment, replacing its drive-through order takers with an AI chatbot powered by Google software. This technological takeover aims to streamline the ordering process by training the AI to understand customer requests and decrease waiting times at the drive-throughs.
According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, Wendy’s is set to launch this eerie transformation in its home state of Ohio, starting with locations in Columbus. The company plans to implement the change in June, all in the name of shorter lines and faster service, as declared by Chief Executive Todd Penegor.

No doubt, very many.
I wonder if the bot can understand jive? Or ‘bonics?
Increased automation and robotics is an unspoken goal behind increasing the minimum wage to outrageous levels.
It’s a kickback to wealthy Silicon Valley donors. At the expense of people who used to work those kinds of jobs, of course.
Wealthy software developers get to become even more wealthy as a result.
If it can't, somebody is going to feel disrespected. I see low-flying lead in the forecast.
“Fight for Fifteen!”
The real minimum wage is Zero.
I’ve been in some of these places, AI won’t adequately replace them, it’ll have to be AS - Artificial Stupid.
Try for it in the public sheol, and watch what happens.
Very quickly, the $5 million per year “news” anchor will disappear to an AI stand-in which will write its own slanted material. Much the same for the college professor and much of corporate middle management.
What about Spanish or Mandarin?!
What robot can cope with thugs reaching in and hitting or stabbing the employee or coming into the dining area to scream rant about one item not in the drive thru bag, followed by shooting everyone in the building?
One that I try to forget was a young black girl working in the drive thru and being pulled out by the black driver who then shared beating responsibilities with his passengers who then pinned her head against the curb and stomped on her between the car and the building. For a minor error of someone else in back who didn’t include some item in the bag.
See if robots can fight that human customer element.
AI “service” equals phone menu “intelligence”
How’s that ≥%15.00/hour minimum wage working out?
I don’t see why a drive-through order taker cannot be programmed to be absolutely perfect, with a literally limitless ability, speak any language.
Just wait and see…
Robots won’t have to be exposed to that. They can stay in a sealed area (along with the few humans) and have the customers’ food be dispensed from a slot or tray with no real attack surface. Think ‘automat’.
Also, burger making bots are a thing now, so there could end up being no humans in the building. Think giant vending machine only with freshly made food and you’ll get the idea.
Wendys also has an app to order through. They offer discounts for using it as well as reward points redeemable for free food. The AI order system at the board is only for people too old, too stubborn or too stupid to use the app.
AI and technological investments will allow more taxes to be paid to government to support an ever-growing class of low-skill, low IQ, poorly socialized, unemployable, dependent Americans
Maybe.
Could also decimate entire huge segments, of our entire economies.
One or the other…
“Also, burger making bots are a thing now, so there could end up being no humans in the building. Think giant vending machine only with freshly made food and you’ll get the idea.”
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Supplied by driverless trucks through secure portals in the building.
Yup. And it will probably be better, never be cranky, never get the order wrong and will apoligize profusely if it does. No attitude. Women and minorities hit hardest.
