Donald Trump: ‘I don’t know why anyone needs an AR-15’
Emily Posts News ^ | 03/27/2023 | Emily Miller

Posted on 03/27/2023 5:43:45 PM PDT by Drew68

UPDATE: I did not know about the Nashville school shooting until after I sent out this story. I did not intend to make a political statement of any kind about the victims from the Covenant School. I pray for the families and the school.

As president, Donald Trump privately pushed for banning AR-15-type rifles, according to a new report. Trump was — and is — a big defender of Second Amendment rights. So the new revelation is surprising that he tried to renew the “assault weapon” ban during his first two years in office.

The news about Trump is buried in a lengthy story in The Washington Post on Monday about AR-15 style rifles. The report says he tried multiple times in 2018 and 2019 to get support for a federal “assault-weapon” ban.

The AR-15 is a style of rifle. The FBI crime statistics for 2021 show there were 11,628 people killed by guns, and 447 of them were by rifles of any type. The bureau does not track the style of the rifle.

A spokesman for Trump, who is running for reelection in 2024, did not deny the remarks. From The Post:

Trump’s bipartisan gun control

While this reporting from The Post is from anonymous sources, it lines up with Trump’s public comment in 2018 in a bipartisan White House meeting on gun control measures after the horrific school mass shooting in Parkland, FL.

Trump told Sen. Dianne Feinstein in a live TV meeting that he would look at her “assault weapon” ban bill. It caused an uproar with the pro-gun groups that helped get him elected. I cued up this video to watch him tell her:

NRA protest

The Post reported this meeting and one other in more detail:

Trump supported the NRA in the same 2018 meeting with Feinstein and others (transcript here):

The not agreeing on everything is a reference to the issue of raising the federal minimum age for owning a gun from 18 to 21 years old.

I am not disputing what you say. I am merely pointing out that the Brits did not employ anything like our rifled long guns (i.e., the Kentucky Long Rifle; the Pennsylvania Rifle; they are the same gun). We also employed hit-and-run tactics far more than the Brits did (and in such actions the more precise rifled barrel proved its worth) in addition to the more common massed rank formations.

Here is a history of the rifle. Very interesting:

> according to a person who heard his comments.

The core of the story — as always an anonymous source who heard it said.

It’s pitiful that after 8 years of this technique they can’t do better … and the same to anyone who takes the article seriously enough to debate it on either side. Complete ****, tripe, garbage. No offense Drew68 but it is unworthy of the bandwidth here.

In his 2000 book “The America We Deserve,” Trump said he supports a ban on assault weapons.

“I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun,” Mr. Trump wrote at the time.

After Parkland, he said: “I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida ... to go to court would have taken a long time,” the president said at the time.

“Take the guns first, go through due process second,” he added.

Nothing new here, Trump’s always been anti-gun.

"Hear, hear! That’s THE reason people need AR type rifles and much more."
Years ago I had a Ruger Mini 14. I didn't like it because I found it inaccurate (at least or me). I traded it for a Winchester lever action .30-30, not the most accurate rifle, but a lot better than the Mini 14 and serves my purpose. My favorite rifle on the range is my old straight-pull K31. I think I'm armed well enough for any thing except trench warfare.

“If they fear DeSantis like they did Trump, he’s toast. If they don’t fear him, then he’s a Bush.”

That bears repeating.

I appreciate that a great deal.

Too many here bark like they are on twitter. They repeat the same complaint, provide zero substance and most importantly avoid debate. A total waste of their time. For whatever reason, they think that type of commentary changes minds. It doesn’t. It only triggers those that disagree to bark back without asking them to clarify……which they cannot.

I’ve asked these folks to clarify and 90% reply with barking and ignoring the question asked. When asked again they indirectly prove they have little understanding about the subject. Yet they persist.

Dear FRitter posters, debating is the only way to change minds. If you cannot explain your position, maybe you should reevaluate it.

In all fairness, the book was written in 2000. That view changed over 23 years but it’s a fair question to ask.

That’s cool. It’s just a shame everybody doesn’t have the same excuse for their statements.

***** He did say in 2018, “I like getting the Guns, before due process.” ******

I wonder what the context was. If it was him in favor of red flag laws or whatever they call it to get guns away from someone that is crazy or threatening until they can assess the person I can understand his statement. Not that I agree with his statement, or the red flag laws. But I can understand why some misinformed people are for it.

"I wonder what the context was."

I think it might have been just after a terrible school shooting while sitting in the White House, on live TV, surrounded by anti-gun politicians including Diane Feinstein.

Trump chose to mislead Feinstein by making statements suggesting that he was in support of her policies. She was so giddy it looked like she might wet her pants.

If the Supreme Court Bruen decision stands and takes full effect, Trump will become the man most hated by Feinstein for having restored the Second Amendment by appointing freedom-loving justices to the Supreme Court.

I believe that Trump fully anticipated Feinstein's reaction and fully intended to disappoint her.

I only agree with you on Trump not getting elected again because i don’t think there’ll be fair elections.

FB just send a sponsored ad from ‘Sandy HookPromise’ asking for 100,000 signatures to ban ‘assault weapons’. Manipulative timing.

This sounds like one of those third-hand descriptions of something he said, and the type of thing that people get riled up about before finding out 48 hours later it never happened, or happened in a very different context and was distorted.

Our Kentucky long rifle was far superior to the British smoothbore “Brown Bess.”

For one shot. It was much inferior for formation fire and had a much lower rate of fire than the Brown Bess.
