Having spent a lot of time around academics and media types I learned years ago that people can be smart, talented, and complete dunces at the same time.
Orwell captured that reality with his typical genius, explaining: “Some ideas are so stupid that only intellectuals believe them.”
....
Ken Burns–who at his best is a talented documentarian–proved his intellectual bona fides on CNN, displaying once again that intelligence, wisdom, and even attention to reality are entirely different from each other. He is smart, but an idiot.
Burns clearly needs an editor and a fact checker in order to sound coherent–and having enjoyed the Civil War documentary from decades ago I appreciate their good work. Burns is a superb storyteller, as long as he is surrounded by people who know what they are doing. But left to his own devices he spouts nonsense.
Burns gets so much wrong in his diatribe, but the ideological incoherence isn’t the striking part of his rant. You almost expect that in the way you expect Stephen Colbert to misrepresent his ideological opponents in the most unfunny way possible. Cable news is filled with ideological incoherence and ignorance of the most basic truths.

“Having spent a lot of time around academics and media types I learned years ago that people can be smart, talented, and complete dunces at the same time.”
So true.
I liked Jazz, Baseball, Civil War and Country Music, but I figure if I watched them again I’d see a lot of leftist micro aggression (to use their term) in the narration and presentation.
Virtually every liberal has dysfunctional logic circuits.
Let me answer the question, “Who Knew Ken Burns is an idiot”, the answer is just everyone knew that who is paying attention and looks beyond his movie making skills.
Same as Stephen King.
PBS ONLY HIRES TWITS!!
Ken Burns slandered Ty Cobb, so I’ve always assumed he is a leftist with little regard for the truth.
Many years ago I sat next to him on a flight from LAX to Newark. We talked baseball for a couple of hours. Was really cool.
Not sure “smart” is the right word here. Talented, capable, gifted - yes. But intelligence is something you either have or you don’t. Take Trump for example - he is clearly a smart man and the fact that he can’t write code doesn’t make him and idiot - because that is a special skill that any intelligent person can learn. Ken Burns is gifted in the specialized area of filmmaking but his lack of logical analysis and integrative thinking prove he is not smart.
Does the author EVER make his point?
“Ken Burns slandered Ty Cobb, so I’ve always assumed he is a leftist with little regard for the truth.”
That’s not all he did wrong, but he did more than enough for me to tune him out long ago.
It’s actually common knowledge.
I think Dan Bongino says it best: A lot of dumb smart people out there.
A talented documentarian?-what that means is that if you can sit through his 20 hour shows you can think of yourself as an intellectual deep thinker. What it really means is that you have the patience to sit through a subject that can be covered in a third of the time.
How much time and effort has Ken Burns wasted over the last three years putting together a propaganda movie about January 6th that’s now worth nothing?
A left wing IDIOT.
I always knew this guy was a jerk.
Me thinks the nail he hit was on his left hand index finger.
Those tend to hurt.
