Okay. Winner gets a case of Tsingtao beer.
I wonder how 45 would have handled this?
The last two weren’t balloons. One was cylindrical in shape and the other octagon with maneuvering capabilities despite no visible propulsion systems.
Do they really need million-dollar systems to take down a freaking balloon?
so, 400K for the missle + 220K or more to operate the jet, the cost to get the balloon is probably in excess of 1mil?
That Sidwinder was overengineered to shoot down uberadvanced aliens from aonther planetary galaxy. I’d be inclined to think the Air Farce got a heck of a deal!
What other system would you suggest? Only one, the first one from China, was a balloon.
Probably was an older James W. Van Scyoc signature model. (Aviation history trivia). I knew James, he was a great pilot and skeet shooter.
Why not just use the guns?
20mm.
Don’t know but I do know we are screeeeewed if and when china decides to invade and hit ALL our nuclear sites! The Pentagon woke generals were caught with their skirts down. So embarrassing. And still no accountability held for those POS generals!
My guess is that China will continue to buy and/or blackmail our politicians so they won’t have to actually ever attack us.
AIM-9 Sidewinders have a self-destruct.
Missile silos? I think that with a Mutuallly Assured Destruction plan, the silos would be empty before they could be hit, obviating the need to even target them. If we had a regime that was reluctant to use them, that changes.
Apparently the pilot didn’t activate the self destruct.
One of the pilots who was in the SB flyover did a really low flyover in an F-35 at about 9 am in my little town of Maricopa last week. Apparently they were practicing for their performance yesterday, but it scared the crap out of most of us!
Apparently they were just floating in the breeze..as far as I know.
Sidewinders targeting system uses infrared to locate an aircraft’s heat and exhaust. Assuming the balloon or Octagonal UFO had no heat signature, the pilot would have to manually line up the target and fire at a distance that did not put their own aircraft in peril by being too close to the explosion. I can see a miss with this approach quite easily infact.
I would imagine in the future they would want to use a laser guided projectile, or...why not just use the guns assuming its over remote areas.
Maybe it landed in a UPS Store and they sent it back to Amazon.
