Convenience store chain 7-Eleven has discovered that homeless people don’t like opera and classical music blaring in their ears as they beg for money, do drugs, or harass the locals. The practice launched in Canada and then San Francisco and several beach locales in Florida followed suit. Now, it’s a mainstream solution for business owners struggling to cope in certain neighborhoods. The immediate problem is that a whole lot of customers who buy Twinkies, lottery tickets, and slushies don’t much like that style of music either. Therein lies the rub.
“Studies have shown that the classical music is annoying. Opera is annoying, and I’m assuming they are correct because it’s working,” said franchise owner Jagat Patel of Austin, TX. Patel has had several complaints about the volume but noted that no police have shown up to tell him to turn it down.
Never underestimate the ingenuity of the capitalist mind: Exploiting a disdain for some music genres, 7-Elevens across the country are practicing this effective dispersal of the homeless — especially in Texas, where people tend to handle their problems without much permission from any government agency. So leave it to the Lone Star folks to use the aggressive and tinny tones of some pieces — like a scherzo from Schubert — to drive the unwashed masses to, say, a local Circle K store playing Barry Manilow’s greatest hits. Neurologists have long touted the benefits of music on the brain. When hearing a pleasant sound, dopamine is released, and mood is enhanced. Everyone knows this. The opposite is also true: Classical music is not everyone’s cup of tea, and when exposed to it, a lot of people avoid souring their pleasure centers by skedaddling. Genius. …

I once got rid of a possum family that was hiding under our deck by playing mariachi music nonstop.
I should have posted a disclaimer - I am a big fan of classical music. We have a great local radio station that I enjoy during my morning commute.
Arnold Schoenberg
“I think I really like classical music because it is so like Math.”
I was trained in classical piano, but don’t really enjoy listening to classical. But playing it is so much fun — especially Bach. I think it’s the math component. Very structured, and it makes sense.
Thanks!
The Donald and Daffy Duck duet in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”.
And I love Baroque. I used to play the trumpet. Baroque trumpet concertos are my favorite.
LRAD is a highly directional audio projector.
Co-register an LRAD emitter with a pan/tilt video camera using facial recognition software.
The camera spots the exact person you want to shoo away, and he/she and ONLY he/she hears whatever audio you choose at whatever volume you set.
Someone standing next to them hears little or nothing.
When there’s someone in front of your store or home you’ve told to go away, the LRAD zaps them with painful noise like Yoko Ono songs or Maxine Waters’ speeches at 120 db.
They flee screaming in pain and terror while the emitter tracks them down the street, for good measure.
They have to get out of the line of sight before they get relief, even if they are hundreds of yards away.
Think they will try you again?
Thanks. I’m listening to her now. Sounds great.
Hip-hop absolutely is music - the music of primitive savages. It is the musical expression of troglodytes with underdeveloped forebrains, primitive peoples who lack any kind of advanced culture or civilization. It’s the best they can do, given their limited cognitive abilities.
Now I happen to like certain savage kinds of music - those that express some basis in civilization and need some talent. Heavy metal comes to mind, a sort of bastard cousin of classical music.
I’m sure Gregorian chant, Handel’s messiah, church organ music will chase off a myriad of goons & hoodlums.
When Disney first opened in Florida, I got stuck in it’s a small world ride, I still have nightmares.
Should’ve tried mothballs
Puccini Dance of the Hours
anyone that doesn’t enjoy that piece is homeless or a Troglodyte
***homeless people don’t like opera and classical music blaring in their ears ***
Nothing new. Some stores had classical opera playing at their storefront decades ago specifically to drive off the loiterers.
No, didn’t know that. And to be fair, maybe that was the album I was traumatized by in college. Some skank I knew played it over and over ad nauseum. It scarred me for life. Yes, to this day. Can’t stand them.
I’m listening to it now. I knew of Dance of the Hours, but didn’t know that was the name of it.
***I actually enjoy classical music.***
Same here.
I wonder if traditional Japanese music and singing would keep the riff-raff away.
And while watching that cartoon 66 years ago I suddenly realized I liked that music!
