Man's EV Takes Five Days to Charge [semi-satire]
Semi-News/Semi-Satire ^ | 22 Jan 2023 | John Semmens

The owner of a GMC Hummer EV SUV wanted to find out how long it would take to fully charge the vehicle. So he plugged it into an ordinary home electrical outlet. The $87,000 electric vehicle took five days to reach full capacity, which is said to provide up to 329 miles of travel before needing to refill.

While a normal person might view this as a bit inconvenient, high-ranking members of the Biden Administration see a "silver lining."

Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm pointed out that "an overlooked advantage of the difficulty charging an electric vehicle is it encourages you to make fewer trips. This saves energy for yourself and those whose fuel consumption is diminished by not having to deal with as much traffic congestion as there would be if EVs were easier to refuel."

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg observed that "the seeming inconvenience of charging and recharging will push more people to walk, bike, or ride public transit--all more efficient ways of traveling than driving a single-occupant personal motor vehicle."

Just FYI, I work for an electric utility. They are actually planning on two way chargers for EV’s.

During Peak Hours - the grid would take energy back from your EV batteries.

I am NOT making this up.

What state is that in? I’ve heard it’s already implemented in some places and is done voluntarily (i.e. sign up for it to get a discount on rates).

Good use for cars sitting idle all day. Charge at low night time rates, sell back during peak time!

Texan was driving through South Louisiana when he saw Boudreaux. And he stopped to chat a bit.

Texan said, “This looks like a nice spread you got here. Back in Texas I’ve got a spread so large I can get in my Truck and sunrise and not reach the other side of it by Sundown.

Boudreaux said, “Yeah, I had a truck like that once, but I sold it.”.

Granholm is really an idiot, but it is nice because she accidentally lets us know what their real goal is.

Without a special home charging circuit, the 5 day charging time isn’t unreasonable. Assuming a typical home outlet is being used:

120v x 20 amps = 2400 watts x 24 hours = 57,600 watts in 24 hours.

250,000/57,600= 4.3 days

Adjust for ac/dc conversation losses and heat losses, roughly 5 days

I'll use my diesel generator to charge my EV. I'll save money, and save the environment at the same time, or something.

More fun facts: There’s some question about how large the battery is in the Hummer and how much stored power is actually useful.

Let’s assume the most favorable treatment and the its 250kW and 100% useable.

250kW is the energy equivalent to approximately 7 gallons of gasoline. So your 3 ton Hummer has the equivalent of a 7 gallon gas tank. And, takes five days to pump the 7 gallon equivalent with a typical home outlet.

I am of the opinion that EVs should be required to provide the following chart to potential buyers.

Hours to charge:
1) from 0 to 100% on a 120v 15 amp household circuit.
2) from 50% to 100% on a 120v 15 amp household circuit.
3) from 0 to 100% on a 220v 30 amp “dryer” outlet
4) from 50% to 100% on a 220v 30 amp “dryer” outlet

Inform the buyer.

Neither Grandholm or Buttigieg seem to have the intelligence that would normally be expected of the average high school student. If they did, they would know that at this stage that an electric vehicle is normally not the best choice & we will need to rely on gas/oil for the foreseeable future.

Excellent analysis!

It’s a shame these advanced maths and calculations you used to determine these facts isn’t something taught in school. If only 8th grade wasn’t so filled with gender studies and white supremacy classes, all potential EV buyers could do this!

“Without a special home charging circuit, “

The guy had a “special home charging circuit”. Some companies are throwing them in with the EV purchase.

Why have a vehicle? Just have a rack of batteries.

I can guarantee you that they are told this when they buy. One reason being they want to also sell them the higher rate charger for their EV.

If they bought from an individual...who knows?
