Perhaps because in the latter case, the perp was caught almost immediately and his motives were pretty much known - compare to the first where it took a very long time to identify and then arrest the perp, and we still don’t know the motives.
What else is there to say about the latter case? at least until there is a trial and sentencing.

Because the VA shooting was by a known suspect who was quickly apprehended. A motive was well known around the campus. It is the definition of an “opened… and closed” case.

Because one was a mass shooting that was immediately solved by arresting a suspect that was already under police watch, and the other was a brutal stabbing murder mystery that had no suspect for several weeks.
For those (like the writers of this story) who want to place the race card; the Virginia killings were also black on black murders so the media did everything possible to downplay it like they do with all black on black murders that occur every single day in every urban hellhole across the nation.
Mass killings are only important if the perp is white. If the perp is white and the victims are non-white it is a 'jackpot' for the media in terms of pushing their narrative.
