America’s infatuation with Ukraine and Zelensky (the Cocaine Comedian) is starting to wane, but most politicians and the public continue to believe the lie that Ukraine is an innocent country being bludgeoned by a communist Russia ruled by a dictator. Oh yeah. Don’t forget. Russia is suffering massive military and economic losses and just can’t live without U.S. investment and Europe’s technology. It is all nonsense, but if you are living in the United States and try to have a reasoned discussion with the fan boys and girls cheering for Ukraine, you would find more success talking to a brick wall.
But cracks are starting to show. One of my brilliant readers sent me the link to Michael Brendan Dougherty‘s latest in the National Review (a conservative icon in the magazine world), What Have We Bargained for in Ukraine? I encourage you to read the entire piece. More importantly, read the comments. That will give you some insight into the insanity that still reigns with regards to sending billions of dollars in money and materiel to Ukraine.
Here are the salient portions of the piece:
My friend and colleague Matthew Continetti writes that “securing America’s position and freedom’s future without direct intervention and for a rounding error in the federal budget is a strategic bargain. Ukraine needs more, not less, U.S. aid, and it needs it now.” In Commentary in November, Noah Rothman wrote that “Kyiv’s victories are our victories, too, insofar as they advance a core American national interest: preserving the stable European covenant that has blessed Western powers with the longest, most durable peace on the Continent in the modern age.”
This view holds that for pennies on the dollar, the U.S. has been able to preserve a democracy threatened by an authoritarian regime, cripple a rival military, strengthen the NATO alliance, prevent Vladimir Putin from an inevitable invasion of NATO territory, and scare off Xi Jinping from ever messing with Taiwan. . . .
Except, none of this is quite true. Crippling a rival military is only worthwhile when you have a strategic reason for doing so, and we conspicuously lack one. The NATO alliance’s duties have been radically expanded with no radical expansion in the share of the alliance’s burdens shouldered by Europe. Ukraine’s ultra-nationalist project is at odds with the democratic and liberal-internationalist values that are used to sell the conflict abroad. The conflict’s financial and moral costs to the U.S. have been growing for nearly a decade, and taking on Ukraine as a permanent dependent will grow them even more. The arc of the conflict is just as likely to encourage as to discourage Xi in his pursuit of Taiwan, given the ways in which our enmeshment in Europe will deplete our attention, resources, and will to be the world’s cop. And finally, no conflict in this blood-stained area of the globe is a mom-and-pop bingo game in which you can cash out your modest investments at any time; Vladimir Putin and Russia have a say in how this ends.
There you have it. A prominent conservative writer who was a strong supporter of Ukraine (and still insists that Putin is some sort of Darth Vader who enjoys borscht) is conceding that America’s strategy is based on a lie.
Over at Neo-Con central — i.e., the Institute for the Study of War — the stenographers masquerading as analysts grudgingly concede that Russia captured Soledar, but then proceeds to focus on their own fantastical speculation that there is political strife in Russia surrounding the Wagner Group’s success in the battle for Soledar. They write nothing about the strategic significance of the fall of Soledar, nothing about the growing Russian pressure on Bakhmut to the south of Soledar and nothing about Ukraine’s catastrophic casualties. It is genuinely bizarre.
“My suggestion is that they can have a daily thread and put all of their British tabloid, Reuters, CNN and other oddball blog links there. And yes, I strongly support keeping it off the front page.”
^^This^^. Thank you Allegra.
“Putin advised them not to claim autonomy”
Oh, sure he did. Was that before or after he armed them with Russian military hardware so they could wage an armed revolution against Putin’s neighbor?
But that doesn’t really answer the question of why Putin’s puppet states are calling themselves “People’s Republics” if Russia is no longer communist. Only communists use that terminology.
You are a pathetic haberdasher of self-serving fake news who immediately discredits other sources that don’t fit your misleading nonsense.
You make a fool of yourself every single day and indirectly you make fools out of FR by association.
That’s not censorship, you silly drama queen. You could still post your propaganda; it would just be kept to one daily consolidation thread.
It’s a suggestion to clean up the news feed.
Do you think the Q articles being kept to one thread is censorship?
Get outta here with that cr@p.
‘What is your point? You think “peoples republic”, translated from Russian, makes them communist?’
My point is that only communists use that terminology.
Perhaps, but George Washington and the Continental Army would not have won if the French had not intervened and sent their army and Navy to fight for the fledgling United States.
But we have repaid France many times over. In reality, their support for us was really just an opportunity to fight against Britain, more then anything else.
But you are incapable of connecting the dots, for you operate solely upon emotion. You have zero critical thinking skills, for if you did you would realize that Zelelnskyy sold his nation and her citizens down the river to the New World Order. Those fighting for their nation are only participating in their own demise for they will never be the free citizens they desire.
All you cheerleaders are doing is supporting their slaughter, the destruction of their nation, along with the destruction of our nation that your own ancestors fought to create. In addition, providing cover for the corruption that has engulfed our nation whose desire is to destroy freedom around the world. Their focus in on America, because once America falls, the rest of the world falls, and they then have total unfettered control, or so they believe. Because power for themselves is all they care about. China & Russia still stand in their way to total control though. Right now China is playing along with them, but when the U.S. falls, then China is sitting in a very strong position.
How that ends up playing out doesn't speak well for humans, regardless of how it plays out. That is the main thing you cheerleaders ignore, discount, or whatever it is that prevents you from looking beyond the simplistic claim of; Russia invaded Ukraine. Ignoring that you are helping to destroy this nation, and that is because, like I said earlier, you have zero critical thinking skills.
If they really were concerned about freedom, and the sovereignty of a foreign nation, explain why they allow an even greater invasion of our nation. I would love to hear your argument to explain that reality.
The only thing false in that statement is the calling Russia communist. I will fix it:
Ukraine is an innocent country being bludgeoned by a corrupt Russia ruled by a dictator. And while there are some who view this as cheap way to weaken Russia as a consequence, it does not take away the just reason to help Ukraine to defend itself from Russian aggression. As for Russia itself, it could spare itself from all this grief by just going home.
How so? Which one of my posts are not legitimately sourced, according to the terms of service here?
I'm not the one who posts random blogs and Youtube videos from pro-Kremlin crackpots like Johnson, Macgregor, and Mercouris. I only post news articles. Sorry if you don't like the outlets, but they are allowed here.
The Q articles come from obscure, random blogs and Youtubes. My posts are sourced from the allowable worldwide news outlets, per the terms of service. Sorry if you don't approve of them, but they are allowed. You can always keep scrolling and not click on the links.
You were saying?
From George Washington to François-Joseph-Paul, comte de Grasse-Tilly, 25 September 1781
This is simplistic?
You are a sick, selfish individual who not only spreads fake news to support your warped views but you actually *want* this fake news to be true.
As a human being you are a failure.
Nice name calling there. What was it that Allegra said about being nasty?
"...who not only spreads fake news to support your warped views
So which of my news sources and articles are "fake news??
Oh, I don’t click on your links.
Unfortunately, yours and other posters’ prolific propaganda litters the news feed several times a day. We have to wade through that sewage to get to any other topics.
And the stupid little trick of posting one of those garbage threads and then replying to yourself and other designated spammers over and over again to keep the thread at the top isn’t fooling anybody. It’s selfish and obnoxious.
This is why one thread a day would be beneficial to all parties. You all could post your multitude of propaganda links and your fellow fanboys could read and discuss them and the rest of us could discuss other topics without having to wade through your flotsam to find them.
I haven’t suggested this to Jim or the Mods yet, but maybe this is a good time to do so. The worst that could happen is that they’d say “no.”
“ Thank you for making my point! Johnson’s a complete joke and charlatan.
And to answer your question, since we’re comparing genealogies, I have EIGHT ancestors who fought in the Continental forces during the War for Independence, another great uncle who died on the last night before the Armistice in World War I, and another who was killed by a kamikaze on an aircraft carrier during World War II.
Anything else?”
*********************************************************************
Anything else? Yes, how many hand grenades have you thrown yourself on to save buddies?
I think you're looking at the wrong side. Projection, and all that.
Well, excuse me! But most of the American people are just plain stupid.
Here is a partial list of why. They elect and support idiots that....
-Shut down the economy for two weeks to flatten the curve, upend everyone’s life for six months and kill the economy
-Promise a covid vaccine that is totally effective and safe — NOT
-Invade Iraq and regime change because of WMD
-Invade Afghanistan, stay there for ten years with nothing accomplished except trillions of dollars spent — and just pull up and leave
-Invade Vietnam and lose
-Absolutely out-of-control spending with over $30 trillion in debt and still growing
-Send $100 billion to a coke-head snake oil salesman in Ukraine
Want more?
Now you’re just grasping at straws.
Don’t try to tell me that your buddies aren’t posting their propaganda threads and replying to themselves and their designated lackeys over and over again on those threads. Daily.
As I said, selfish and obnoxious.
You people want to take over FR with your excessive propaganda.
We want FR to be a decent news aggregate. One thread a day will still give you a platform but will free up the feed for other topics.
Why does that upset you?
