California's Newsom blames climate change, to seek federal assistance as more storms line up to batter state

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced during a press conference on Sunday that he is requesting a state of emergency from the White House as another round of storms targets the Golden State this week.

Severe storms in California knocked out power to over 560,000 homes on Sunday. Along with power outages, the state has faced several days of severe weather events and two more are scheduled to occur this week. The first storm is expected to begin Monday and go into the early morning hours on Tuesday, and the second storm will occur from Jan. 12-14. "We’ve been at this how many days and expect to see the worst of it still in front of us," Newsom said. "We’re anticipating some very intense weather coming in tomorrow, tomorrow evening in particular, into the early hours of Tuesday morning."

The governor and his team referred to these storms as atmospheric rivers, or storms that dump massive amounts of rain, causing flooding, mudslides, property damage and the loss of life.

So how many emergencies are we under now?

I actually see floods as a state of temporary emergency. However “emergency” has lost all meaning.

Yep, voters passed bonds for reservoir construction in 2014. Environmental permitting and court cases have held up everything. And in 2019, California eliminated 23 dams - environmental concerns, of course.

The wildfires are indeed a problem as anyone caught in one or losing property in one can attest.

But they are part of California’s ecosystem and many species are dependent upon them.

Country towns need good fire policy and good exit ability.

Should he blame God?

God might be upset.

He should be grateful.

Southern CA in particular is desert and is not self-sustaining. Maybe they can get some sustenance from the rain.

Well, if it’s Russia’s fault, then you know Trump is the one really behind the storms. It’s Trump’s revenge for not voting for him in 2020.

Why does CA need Fed funding? They’re talking about giving a couple trillion for black reparations, and they can spend forever from their vast resources.

If the republicans don’t get their S together there's a very high probability of him being our next president. It can happen. Beware.

Excellent insight.

I obviously disagree with the reparations... that being said, I read somewhere that CA only gets back $40 out of every $60 in matching funds so it is not like we are freeloaders out here.

Maybe they would prefer the drought.

Once all the dams are dismantled, they will complain about flooding.

Climate change caused the drought.

Climate change caused the rainstorms.

I agree, not at all an uncommon event on the west coast. It's gonna happen from time to time. In about 1997, I was doing some work for about six weeks at an oil refinery in the LA area. Weekdays in CA and fly home to Houston each weekend.

That winter was pretty rough for southern CA. Gales were blowing in about once per week. Rotten, windy, rainy for a day or two then the worst was over. No outside work for me on the bad days. Rain and big wind on the coast, big rain in the inland agricultural areas and big wind, big snow in the Sierras.

The weather pattern looked like the satellite photo pinned at top except the center of rotation was shifted south so LA was generally slammed with the worst weather. I’ve lost track of one thing…. Were we in global warming in about 1997 or still in the we are all going to freeze in a new ice age?

It would probably be an economic boon if the weather stayed wet, except we’d probably have to park kayaks outside our bungalows...

One Act of God the Climate Changers overlooked and nothing is ever mentioned about it. The Jan 15, 2022 eruption of the Tonga Volcano in the South Pacific. It pumped estimated 58 billion tons of ash and vapors into the atmosphere, it set off seismometers throughout the world. It is considered the strongest volcano to erupt in 1200 years by experts. It totally destroyed the islands that existed there and Changers never mention the impact it is having on the wx around the World. Sort of blows the Climate Changers out of their arguments. Newsom doesn’t have grounds for money needed due to Climate,,,,what a fool.

Some economists said reparations should be $1million each. In a State that never had slavery.

Well, he’s right.

If there was no storm there...and then there was. Isn’t that a change of climate?

Whatever the problem, it’s always the same solution; spend more money.
