1933: Thomas Thurmond and John Holmes lynched in St. James Park

No text with this one. Instead, there are a few short videos. I don't every remember about hearing about this incident. Apparently, an entire town lynched a couple of suspected murderers of the son of a leading businessman. The thing is, though, a lot of people who looked at this case think they were innocent. They made a movie out of it.

I wouldn't normally post something like this because there is not test, but something about this incident intrigues. I am going to have to see if I get the movie via streaming.

I normally only post things if there the write up on them is not too long, not too short, and without too much in the way of a pdf from the original sources that is hard to read. The three videos that are viewable ran without problems for me and were a good length. It takes less than ten minutes to view them all.

Text, not test. I’m tired. It’s been a long long weekend.

I read an excellent book on this incident.

It is rumored that Jackie Coogan (Uncle Fester on The Addams Family tv show), who was a college buddy of victim Brooke Hart, was one of the lynchers who helped to hold the rope hanging one of the kidnappers

Maybe I’m wrong but wasn’t former child actor Jackie Coogan involved somehow in this lynching?

I watched a YouTube video about this a few years ago.

IIRC, a local radio station did a live broadcast from the lynching.

They told me you were hung,

And black protruding tongue

This is a bit off topic from the lynching, but the film at the “Executed Today” site is titled “Valley of Heart’s Delight.”

Not many know that was the colloquial name of the Santa Clara Valley before it got renamed “Silicon Valley.” About 40 years ago, when I was working in Palo Alto, the pharmaceutical company Syntax Corporation on Hillview Ave held various rotating art exhibits. One of the best was a show of large B&W prints of original photographs of the “Valley of Heart’s Delight” from the late 1800s to about 1950 or 1960 when the magnificent orchards were getting cut down for post-war housing subdivisions. I still remember being awed by the agricultural past of the area. In February and March when the fruit trees bloomed, it looked like a winter blizzard had hit with fruit blossoms all over the place.

When I moved there in the 70s, there was still a lot of agriculture all over the valley. Today, it’s all gone except for a few “Heritage Orchards” here and there. It’s so sad that it has become one gigantic, ugly industrial and commercial landscape.

If you do a video search on “John Holmes” and “hung” you’re gonna be surprised!

—The Loved One, by Evelyn Waugh

In one scene in Lost in Translation, John and Charlotte run into an actress played by Anna Faris. She's registered under the fake name Evelyn Waugh and is the stereotypical young shallow starlet that some people assume is typical of Los Angeles. Charlotte points out that Evelyn Waugh was male, and John chastises her, "Why do you have to point out how stupid everyone is?" In almost every scene, John wants to make other people comfortable at Charlotte's expense.

Could be. These guys were really hated. The young man murdered was from a rich family and it was a botched kidnapping. Not a scrap of a rationale for the murder. I cannot understand all the wailing over this bit of popular justice.

That is really interesting. Valley of Heart’s Delight sounds so lovely.

I feel like we’ve made some bad choices as a Nation. Did not feel this way in the past, but now I do.

Never saw the movie. I wonder if Charlotte pronounced Waugh’s first name correctly, as EVE-a-lin, rather than the more usual EV-a-lin. The former is how the name is pronounced when it’s used as a male’s name.
