Ukraine-Lights Out, No Water And Soon No Heat

Earlier today the Russian military shut down the Ukrainian electricity network.

Previous attacks had limited the distribution capacity to some 50% of demand. Controlled blackouts over several hours per day allowed to give electricity for a few hours to most parts of the country. The attack today created a much larger problem. Not only were distribution networks attacked but also the elements that connect Ukraine's electricity production facilities to the distribution network. All four nuclear power stations of Ukraine with their 15 reactors are now in shutdown mode.

Kiev along with most other cities of Ukraine no longer has electricity.

Moldova is likewise affected as it received some 20% of its electricity from Ukraine. When the Ukrainian network shut down the only local thermal power plant shut down too. It is likely that it can be switched on again but that can be a complicated process.

Limited electricity imports from the European system into Ukraine may still be possible but that electricity would only be available in Ukraine's western cities...

"“As the scope of damage to Ukraine’s energy systems has come into focus in recent days, Ukrainian and Western officials have begun sounding the alarm but are also realizing they have limited recourse. Ukraine’s Soviet-era power system cannot be fixed quickly or easily. In some of the worst-hit cities, there is little officials can do other than to urge residents to flee — raising the risk of economic collapse in Ukraine and a spillover refugee crisis in neighboring European countries.”"

As Fats Waller might have put it, if that isn't losing, it'll have to do, until the real thing comes along...

I swear there’s at least one who I think should register as a citizen agent operating on behalf of a foreign government. The amount of time this person spends on the deluge of BS is frankly astounding to me. That person ‘must’ be getting paid....

Stop making so much sense. :)

You’re going to get the ankle-nippers all yip-yapping and quivering in their righteous anger.

The establishment GOP doesn’t care because all of the giveaways to UKR are good for the MIC, Military-Industrial-Complex, and what’s good for the goose is good for the gander (establishment RINOs and GOP) because they (ganders) get kickbacks, end up on MIC boards as highly paid trustees, etc.

These days (and for a couple of decades, actually) NATO hasn’t bothered much with that pesky “North Atlantic” thing. As all entities supported by tax money and scare tactics, they continually expand the realm of their so-called responsibility.

To my mind, NATO should have been disbanded as soon as the USSR broke up.

You are wrong on every count. The Ukrainians know the reality of siting under artillery bombardments and yet they are willing to fight on. The atrocities committed by the Russians are very real. Ukrainians do not want to live as slaves under invader pigs and apes. The Ukrainians have already won the respect of the world with their spirited resistance to the evil invasion. The one-time-zone David has humiliated the eleven-time-zone Goliath.

My wife is one of those Russian speakers from the Donbas. She and her family and friends know the truth of the 2014 invasion and that series of atrocities. Death to the invaders !!! Death to Russian trolls !!! Glory to Ukraine.

Death to Russian trolls !!!

My problem with this is that YOU are an interest-connected party (by marriage, presumably) and that it doesn't just seem to be aimed at actual Russians, somewhere in Russia, trolling the internet to further whatever interests and that you're really calling for the death of persons here on FR who don't fall lickspittle lockstep in line with this Administration's seeming blank check bonanza to UKR to putz around some proxy war. It's a disgusting statement. If I could block you, I would.

We hanged Julius Streicher at Nurnberg for doing exactly what some of the Russian trolls are doing. They excuse the invasions of the Republic of Georgia and Ukraine. They deny the atrocities committed by Russia. The spread hate and support genocide against Ukrainians.

You try to equate your comment with irrelevant historical nonsense but in the end I still get the feeling you’re not talking about real Russians here. Talk about spreading hate.
Go away.

“...Spreading hate...”

What about spreading war and misery. The Republic of Georgia did not invade Russia. Ukraine did not invade Russia. Russia started the war and only sought solutions through violence and terror. Now we have a war and should support those who fight it and stop Russia now to keep it from spreading its violence to other areas of eastern Europe.

"We" have? Excuse me, please explain to me when was the discussion, debate, and Congressional vote for WAR involving the US earlier this year when it started? Tell me. It was UNILATERALLY decided by a perverted, demented President whose handlers decided was good for the military industrial complex, NATO and the EU. If you want to fight this war, then put on your boots fella and take a trip there. Not me. I did my time and I sure as hell didn't leave anything there.

Thank you. That poster is one of the nastiest, most hateful people on FR, IMO.

Virulent hate like that clouds a person’s ability to think and interact logically.

The perv demented Prez and his handlers were shocked when Zelensky refused to take a powder and the ride out of the country. Biden is not Ukraine’s pal. Compare Nixon’s delivery of aid to Israel during the ‘73 war with what Biden has slow walked to Ukraine.

When I say “we” I am not referring to America. I am referring to freedom-loving people everywhere.

So far in your replies to me you’ve invoked Nuremburg and Julius Streicher, Nixon and the Israelis in 73........all in an effort to somehow hopelessly equate your point of today but it is all just distracting BS, IMO.

If you wanna ride the Way Back Machine and reminisce, let’s try Einsatzgruppen 3 and its activities with willing Ukrainians in dealing with Jews in the Urkraine during WWII, then. There are some very good shows on Netflix about it.

Your fantasy of Russia winning in Ukraine has blinded you to reality. Russian attacks on civilian targets are not going to win the war but each time they happen Ukraine gets more support from foreign nations.

The Russians in Crimea, the Donbass, and Belgorod better hope that the Ukrainians don't decide to return the favor and turn off their power, water, and heat. They don't have anyone to turn to for assistance but North Korea, Cuba, Iran, and Nicaragua.

Now we have a war and should support...

The world got a war handed to them by Putin and his Russian supporters. Now we all have to deal with it.

Most decent people support the victim of an attack. Some people, like you would rather side with the attacker than the victim. That is unusual, but it can happen.

Most of us would go to the assistance of a woman getting raped in a parking lot. You seem like you would either cheer on the rapist or decide to ignore the pleas of the victim.
