I think you’re basically right.
Trump may be the only candidate with the rhetorical flexibility (still not beholden to anyone) and Mike Tyson-style aggressiveness-on-tap that may be needed to pummel the Deep State during the next two years and thereby soften it up its formidable defensive fortifications (which of course include the DOJ/FBI, and maybe also the NYC prosecutors who are seemingly always threatening Trump).
He must know something, otherwise this is inexplicable...

My personal opinion is that DeSantis would not run against Trump if he thought Trump would be a strong candidate in 2024 and likely to win. But if DeSantis concludes that Trump would be a weak candidate in 2024 and lose the 2024 general election, I think that is enough for him to run to challenge Trump for the nomination.
