The biggest reason Trump's attack on DeSantis was a mistake
Hot Air ^ | November 7, 2022 | DAVID STROM

I have made no secret of the fact that I think Ron DeSantis is an extraordinary politician. I prefer him to any of the potential candidates for President, and am willing to explain to anybody why that is. This, though, is not that column.

I also am no Never-Trumper, and would vote for him over any Democrat in a heartbeat. Trump has a lot to be proud of, and without his leadership the Republicans would still be captured by the Establishment™.

Now that I have put my biases on the table, let me give you my analysis of what I believe to be Trump’s huge own goal.

My most objective take possible, given my acknowledged preferences, is that President Trump made a big unforced error attacking DeSantis at his rally the other day.

Not just because he did so just before an election day on which the Republicans simply must destroy the Democrats–after all, Governor DeSantis doesn’t need Trump’s support to win. If Trump went into full attack mode it wouldn’t dent DeSantis’ reputation one little bit.

So Trump’s attack is electorally irrelevant (which in itself is an unforced error, as it shows Trump to be weaker than he wants to look against a political rival).

Trump’s attack was a mistake because he opened up an old wound that could be Trump’s Achilles’ Heel: his huge mistakes dealing with COVID. Mistakes that DeSantis saw early and rejected quickly.

The biggest reason it was a mistake is that Trump may need a pardon from President Desantis in 2025. I hope not, but it could come to that.

We need to turn this Country around fast and Trump is the guy who can do it in 24, DeSantis gets his chance in 28 that why we can have 12 years of conservatism opposite 8.

There was no reason to open that fight while they are not actually in opposition.

The fault lies with Desanctimonious One because he has not made it totally clear he will not run against Trump in ‘24. It is his fault all the way.

Well, the neos are working overtime to make sure they can keep President Trump off the ballot... They are working hand in hand with the lawlessness that now rules over US...

It makes no sense for him to declare if Trump has not.

He could say it that way, if Trump declares I will not run. He did not do that either.

“Nobody is really going to challenge Trump if he runs”

DeSantis knows the deep state will do everything in their power to keep Trump out, including prosecuting him on trumped up charges, and seems to be waiting in the wings for that to happen, whereupon the torch will fall to him.

Personally I expect a civil insurrection if the deep state were to attempt that, but who knows. They are so vehemently against Trump that if they can’t legally prevent him from running I wouldn’t be surprised if they attempted to assassinate Trump as a last resort, they see him as that much of a threat to their plans.

There are also rumors from Ukraine that Sullivan has pressed Zelensky to launch a Kherson campaign as soon as possible. Zelensky is said to have agreed to do so.

But the Ukrainian army does not want to do that - at least not now. The Russian troops in the area have been reinforced. The fields are muddy and can not be crossed by heavy vehicles. Russian artillery attacks destroy equipment pre-positioned for the attack before it is ready to come near the front line.

The Ukrainian military has for weeks tried probing attacks in the Kherson region. These had no significant results while the attacking units had high losses. The units deployed around the region have been there since early October or longer. The Military Land deployment map shows only one unit that arrived just five days ago. The 98th Azov battalion, one of the fascist volunteer forces, has been positioned in the back of 128th Mountain Assault Brigade which, in recent weeks, has had some of the most serious losses.

The use of such 'nationalist' forces to prevent the retreat of exhausted front line units has been a regular occurrence in this war.

Ukraine has for weeks had no success on the battle field. Washington wants it to show such a success so that it can tell its allies that the war can be won by the Ukrainian side. The push for an attack on Kherson is again part of the overall campaign to convince Europeans that they should sustain the efforts to arm and support Ukraine.

The campaign is misleading. Ukraine is losing the war badly. But the U.S. wants to fight Russia down to the last Ukrainian - and down to the last Euro.

You onlyTrump cultists need to stop insulting people who have already voted twice for Trump by repeatedly calling us “neverTrumpers”. Otherwise you risk turning some of us into “neveragainTrumpers”.

I think you've captured my concerns about DeSantis perfectly.

I'd point out that this would be a great country if Ron DeSantis was the worst political figure in the GOP!

If you spent just half the time criticizing the bad guys that you spend criticizing the good guys - nobody would call you neverTrumpers.

President Trump is obviously one of the good guys.

Constantly running him down every chance you get speaks volumes.

......he opened up an old wound that could be Trump’s Achilles’ Heel: his huge mistakes dealing with COVID.

Excuse me? I don't recall any such thing. His last day in office was in January 2021 and he'd already done what he could to speed up (Read not Pfizer et al hiding vaccine test trial results for 75 years), he put money and government assistance in where the deep state told him. The Washington University IHME (significantly funded by Bill Gates) was predicting over a million DEATHS alone in the coming year. Add to that the globalist WHO, CDC and alarmists. Leftist Governors and mayors were clamoring for respirators and hospital beds. There was a several million dollar tent hospital set up in NYC that went UNUSED. He used the defense acquisition priority process to get manufacturers to supply respirators, he sent the hospital ship to NY (which remained largely UNUSED), and a lot of those respirators were later sold off or junked. As far as what he said, he went too far. There's no need for division between the two. But don't trying blame it on his actions for Covid.
