The biggest reason Trump's attack on DeSantis was a mistake
Hot Air ^ | November 7, 2022 | DAVID STROM

I have made no secret of the fact that I think Ron DeSantis is an extraordinary politician. I prefer him to any of the potential candidates for President, and am willing to explain to anybody why that is. This, though, is not that column.

I also am no Never-Trumper, and would vote for him over any Democrat in a heartbeat. Trump has a lot to be proud of, and without his leadership the Republicans would still be captured by the Establishment™.

Now that I have put my biases on the table, let me give you my analysis of what I believe to be Trump’s huge own goal.

My most objective take possible, given my acknowledged preferences, is that President Trump made a big unforced error attacking DeSantis at his rally the other day.

Not just because he did so just before an election day on which the Republicans simply must destroy the Democrats–after all, Governor DeSantis doesn’t need Trump’s support to win. If Trump went into full attack mode it wouldn’t dent DeSantis’ reputation one little bit.

So Trump’s attack is electorally irrelevant (which in itself is an unforced error, as it shows Trump to be weaker than he wants to look against a political rival).

Trump’s attack was a mistake because he opened up an old wound that could be Trump’s Achilles’ Heel: his huge mistakes dealing with COVID. Mistakes that DeSantis saw early and rejected quickly.

The ad left me wondering just who Desantis was intending on fighting. Given his propensity to be glad-handing GOPe monied interests...

The GOPe hates God, and any who follow His instructions. Sooo might be a bit soon to discern what Desantis’ motivations truly are.. but Desantis DID present himself as a fighter from God.

We all know where DeSantis stands on endless “neo-con” wars. He will do whatever Raytheon, Boeing, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce tell him to do when it comes to pissing away trillions of dollars and thousands of American lives.

If Trump had half the class and charisma of Ronald Reagan, he would have won a 1984 Reagan like landslide in 2020 that would have been so far beyond the margin of cheat that Dems would have been helpless.

I’ll vote for Trump in 2024 if he is the Republican candidate (just like I did in 2016 & 2020), but I’d rather see DeSantis as the nominee. Trump has just about worn me out.

Sorry for the confusion ...

Otherwise, there would have been no reason NOT to let people go to work at their own place of employment -- where visitors from other states wouldn't have been showing up anyway.

I’ll wait until the dust settles before I start frothing at the mouth over the potential 2024 primary runners.

Trump has just about worn me out.

How does he wear you out? Does he make you follow him around on his hectic schedule? Does he put you on a stairclimber?

I have to laugh at comments like this. So ridiculous.

That’s what I’m afraid of. And as another freeper has pointed out, he didn’t come out against the lockdowns and mandates until well after others did when he saw it was politically popular with the right. I would much prefer and trust Kari Lake over him any day. While I like many things about DeSantis I’m afraid the trust just isn’t there. He’s not really an outsider like Trump, he strikes me more as just a clever politician.

Trump is said “to be Trump, and he will never change.”

Therefore, he will

- choose poorly, for Attorney General
- choose poorly, for FBI Director
- choose poorly, for his Chief of Staff
- choose poorly, for offices of the Dept. of Defense

and in general, fail again to establish a Trump Administration in depth.

On the other hand, he could correct and self-discipline himself, and endeavor to address his errors.

He will have improved chances for success, by “just barging in” to many departments and places of the government, as he has had that reputation among his businesses.

Show up in person, in the trenches.

We are at an impasse.

I see a great man with a fundamental blind spot that needs to be fixed. It cause unforced errors. Yea, sure, senate confirmation and the swamp and MSM. Understood. Nonetheless, Trump simply helps his enemies with terrible HR skills. Ultimately, it limits MAGA and I'm tiring of seeing yet another hissy fit where Trump trashes HIS bad personnel decision publicly (small wonder good people may balk at working for him).

I believe you see a great man with no personnel blind spot. You attribute these bad picks to senate confirmation and the swamp and MSM, and think any other President would have done the same thing, or worse. Except with Trump, we get a fighter and MAGA will prevail.

We shall see. Be well.

Get back to me when you demonstrate basic understanding the meaning of the term "consuming limited resources."

Example: The Yankees came to Florida in droves, consuming limited resources including healthcare and retail staples.

I think yours is an excellent summary. Every word a winner. I love Trump and don’t think it’s much of an exaggeration to say he saved the country. But the trail of idiots and RINOS and traitors he put in his administration which you itemize in your post is heartbreaking. So much more could’ve been accomplished were it not for this list of terrible appointments. Truly a downside of an incredible man who loves his country.

This is some turd-polishing bullshit.

"If Trump went into full attack mode it wouldn’t dent DeSantis’ reputation one little bit."

And that's why everyone repeated DeSanctimonious, riiiiight? What an idiot, talk about 'own goal' -- why would Strom Bourbon even squeeze out this article if the attack had no effect?

"So Trump’s attack is electorally irrelevant (which in itself is an unforced error, as it shows Trump to be weaker than he wants to look against a political rival)."

Riiiggght, because DeSantis was so much in demand literally interviewing 3 - 4 candidates for each seat as Trump did.

"Trump’s attack was a mistake because he opened up an old wound that could be Trump’s Achilles’ Heel: his huge mistakes dealing with COVID. Mistakes that DeSantis saw early and rejected quickly."

Bogus. People don't remember the lockdowns (unfortunately), the only lookback people care about are the deaths per state, and Florida is right there at the top.

"Adjusting for population, there have been a total of 248 COVID-19-related deaths for every 100,000 Americans nationwide. In Florida, deaths attributable to the coronavirus per capita are even more common than they are nationwide. Across the state, 62,390 people have died from the coronavirus, equal to about 293 deaths for every 100,000 people. Of all states -- and Washington D.C. -- Florida has the 11th highest death rate per capita."

“The God made me a fighter ad is as sanctimonious as a tent preacher’s traveling circus.”

Yeah that struck me as a cynical attempt of his to pander to the Christian right. Reminded me of that Neil Diamond song, pack up the babies and grab the old ladies, and everyone goes to Brother DeSantis’s show... lol.

Seems like a few people can take a joke. Actually, it was quite a clever remark and I don’t consider it an ATTACK. When I was in the Navy, few people were called by their real name... it was always by some nickname. Sometimes not too flattering of a nickname at that.

I'm gonna cut Trump a little slack on her. She seems to have gone off the rails.

That said, someone who was all-in for Hillary and flipped the script when it became $ubstantial to do $o should have been screened better.
