Senator Ron Johnson (R, WI) unveils abortion question for Wisconsin voters

Wisconsin’s Republican U.S. Senator Ron Johnson’s says his proposed referendum on abortion is simple.

Johnson, late Tuesday, released his suggestion for a ballot question that would allow voters in the state to decide on a new abortion law.

"At what point does society have the responsibility to protect the life of an unborn child?” the question asks.

Johnson then gives voters 10 options, ranging “From the moment of conception,” to “Never – an unborn child has no right to life.”

Johnson told the crowd at Tuesday’s Rotary Club of Milwaukee campaign event that he believes the people of Wisconsin should be allowed to decide where restrictions on abortion belong.

“Nine justices on the Supreme Court couldn’t decide. I don’t think 535 members of Congress should decide, I don’t think 132 members of the Wisconsin state legislature should decide this for Wisconsin,” Johnson explained. “I think it is time, after 50 years of delayed debate, that ‘We the People’ should decide.”

Johnson said he’d like to see similar votes in all 50 states.

“I’d like to see a one time, single issue referendum to decide the question,” he added.

Wisconsin doesn’t allow for binding referendum questions.

In fact, Republicans lawmakers in Wisconsin on Tuesday gaveled-in and gaveled-out of a special session called by Gov. Tony Evers to create a binding referendum pathway in the state’s constitution.

“On the ceiling of the Governor’s Conference Room in the Capitol is a phrase I’ve thought a lot about over the last three years: ‘the will of the people is the law of the land.’ Well, right now in Wisconsin, when it comes to reproductive freedom, the will of the people isn’t the law of the land – but it damn well should be,” the governor said in a statement after Republicans ignored his suggestion.

Johnson said abortion is a “profound moral issue,” but said it’s not an 'either or' issue.”

Johnson explained: “You have to balance the rights of a mother with, at some point and time, the rights of an unborn child. Let’s take the time to have the thorough, thoughtful, and compassionate discussion about what life looks like at each stage.”

Mulling this one over. Not sure if the timing is right so close to his re-election, but he's a smart guy and has decent people surrounding/advising him, and this IS his 3rd campaign go-round for Senator.

And he's running against pro-abort and anti-cop Jesse Mandella Barnes who will have to respond, 'Yes. I AM for killing babies from conception through birth.'

It seems to me that, except for cases of rape, every woman has the right TO CHOOSE NOT TO HAVE SEX.

“Let’s take the time to have the thorough, thoughtful, and compassionate discussion about what life looks like at each stage.”

We’ve been having that discussion for 50 years. It’ll never resolve. “Discussion” and “conversation” are a politician’s escape hatch.

Raw Democracy is simply tyranny of the majority.

Our founders knew this... shame so many today are so poorly educated they don’t get this.

He should be hammering home the fact that the entire Dem party, including his opponent, want unlimited taxpayer financed abortion right up to the moment of birth.

THAT’S the “extreme” position.

‘Johnson explained: “You have to balance the rights of a mother with, at some point and time, the rights of an unborn child.”’

Sure, if the mother’s life is threatened, then you can “balance” it with the threat that abortion places on the life of the child. Otherwise you err on the side of doing the least harm and let the child have a chance to live.

I think the point is, each state is having the same discussion, what to do about abortion, ultimately it will be decided by the voters of each state as it should have been all along instead of 9 unelected judges deciding the issue for 300 million people

Sure, and I’ll still be here to point out to them when the voters get it wrong.

“It seems to me that, except for cases of rape, every woman has the right TO CHOOSE NOT TO HAVE SEX.”

The so-called morning after pill has made the rape argument obsolete in the vast majority of cases.

Why is a U.S. Senator proposing a state referendum.

Perhaps but I trust the voters every time versus some unelected judge

Because Johnson is panicking and is accepting the Left's premise that being pro-life is a bad thing for Republicans, that they need to be "moderate" on the issue, or else millions of angry pro-abortion supporters are going to storm the polls and vote them out.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Overturning Roe v Wade was a huge victory for conservatives. Yet, here you have Republicans, still giving wishy-washy answers on the issues, instead of doing what Lake is doing in AZ, demanding that the media asks the Dems their radical stand on the issue.

Not saying surrender on the issue. Just loudly proclaim you're pro-life and SCOTUS has spoken, and then immediately move on to Biden's economy, billions to Ukraine, crime, Fentanyl, open borders. That's why Dems are running on abortion.

“..responsibility to protect the life of an unborn child?”

This is a prejudicial way to get at the issue, since it forces the respondent to accept that a fertilized egg or early fetus is a child. Pro-choice people aren’t likely to accept that premise. Honest way to get at this would be to ask at what age the respondent considers a fertilized egg to be an independent “life” i.e., a child, as opposed to an extention of the mother.

And when the Left tried to codify late (even post birth) abortion, what did they think would happen?
California AB2223
Maryland SB669
Virginia HB2491
Actual proposed legislation
For every action, there is a reaction.

It Is God’s Law that we should follow. 10 commandments.

Actions have consequences. The creation of life of an innocent child is a consequence of the relations of two people and society should protect innocent life. God has given humans that precious gift of life to create another human being. We need to be responsible, nurture, love and help that life.

Abortion is morally wrong. When a human hurts or causes harm to an innocent person, then that innocent person still bears the pain and the effects of that action and has to live with it. While it might not seem fair in the case of rape, it is a consequence of an evil action and the innocent child should not be killed to resolve that evil action.

God will forgive individual sins if we are truly sorry.

However, will God forgive a society that flaunts the killing of innocent children? Will God forgive the Democrat Party and some Republicans and those that support and vote for the evil practice of abortion?

For those that don’t believe in God and feel that the laws of man are more important, then they should study and examine the consequences of Hell for all eternity after death. Consider Luke 16:19-31
