I told my commander, that after 20 years of service, I regret my choice to join. I’m sure not going to recommend it to anyone I like.

Many illegals will be happy to put on the uniform for the pay and benefits. This has been going on for a while. I am certain that the man my late wife’s niece married is an Mexican illegal. Very dark skinned, classic cholo build and always looking down to avoid meeting my gaze,very limited English vocabulary. Made sure his wife quickly got pregnant and then again as as soon as possible. His parents showed up to live with him.Neither could speak word one of English. And this was in the USMC about 5 years ago.
It’s not a military anymore, it’s now a liberal political entity that normal people reject and now patriotic families are dissuading their kids from joining, and military families are starting new legacies. Nice work Brandons.

Unmentioned in the article but something I think might be a big factor is that young people today simply do not want to work. It isn’t only the military that is having a hard time finding and keeping new employees. I visit dozens of businesses a week for fire inspections and always chat up the owners, asking them how things are going and this is ALWAYS their number 1 complaint. Not the cost of doing business or government regs, but short staffing because nobody is applying for the jobs that are open and not getting filled..
I took the ASVAB in 1982. Because Reagan was CinC and things were getting back to patriotic then.
I was stoned because I smoked pot every day then. They called me back for a very weird follow up test on language skills - just me and one officer in a room with him playing incomprehensible sounds on a tape player and asking me to make sense out of what I heard.
I guess I passed, because before I knew it, I was at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey learning Russian for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 52 weeks. I ended up at a listening post in Germany for 4 years.
As soon as I was sworn in, in never smoked pot again. And soon we won the Cold War.
Maybe if we had someone like Reagan in charge, we wouldn’t be having these recruiting problems.
Homeschooling is not the problem.
I would never advise anyone to join now.
