2022 Dog Bite Fatality: Elderly Woman Found Dead After Dog Attack in a Central Valley Apartment in Las Vegas

Family members said "Buck," a rescue pit bull of five or six years, "would never intentionally hurt her," referring to 89-year old Joan Caffiel.1 On Tuesday morning, Buck suddenly attacked and killed Caffiel. "I don't know what happened, but that is totally not like Buck at all," the victim's grandson, Peyton Faircloth, told reporters. Faircloth said his grandmother suffered from dementia. At the time of the attack, she was being watched by a hired caretaker.

"We had Buck for about five, six years. There was not a mean bone in that dog's body. That dog would sleep with us in our bed every single night. And he 'loved' grandma. Very, very protective of grandma ... He would never intentionally hurt her. He probably was trying to protect her from somebody or something." - Peyton Faircloth

Faircloth lived in the apartment with Caffiel, but was away when the fatal attack occurred. Faircloth erroneously claimed that Buck must have been "trying to protect her from somebody or something," in an effort to explain the deadly attack. Protect her from what? The caretaker? Also, why would a dog that was an alleged "guard dog" for the grandma, kill the grandma? The family, also called the fatal attack a "freak accident," a term first coined by a pit bull owner in 1985. . .

A word of wisdom! The loser who picked this dog for grandma should be fed to a pack of pit bulls waiting for the needle.

A last meal, as it were.

Very strange to want to keep alive the animal that killed your grandmother.

I have no use at all for animal haters. None at all. Zero value to me.

Pit Bull Attacks: Cancer Survivor Mauled, Baby Dies, as Wealthy Animal Groups Fight Breed Specific Laws

“ . . .However, most [pit bull] attacks are not reported by the media. As an example, in New York City alone, there were 2,600 pit bull bites recorded by the Department of Health in a recent three-year period. During this period only 20 bites were actually covered by the media.”

“The group of wealthy animal “charities” thriving on the public’s soft heart for animals and generous donations, including Best Friends Animal Society, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) , and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), joined by the nation’s most prominent dog breeding organizations, the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the American Dog Breeders Association (ADBA), which began as a registry to fighting dogs, are preparing for an appearance before Canadian Insurance Legislators to convince them that this breed is no more dangerous than a toy poodle and control the laws regarding dangerous breeds of dogs.”

“6 years, wouldn’t hurt anyone? “BS

What proof do we have that they were constantly around people and had no issues? Just the owners word?

My son got bit by a Doberman when he was little. He got too close to his face. The dog felt threatened.

My friend had a German Shepherd who would not let me out the car in his driveway. The dog was being protective.

There is always a reason a dog is aggressive. Not because they mentally break down and decide to attack. They are being protective, territorial or defensive. If your dog is territorial or protective you, the owner, are responsible for the dog.

Obviously, they are not the same.

None of my family’s Pitbulls have ever bit my niece.

But my parent’s Beagle did.

The real difference is that a nip from a beagle is not fatal.

When the pit bits your niece she will die. Her guts will be strung out all over the place. That is what they do.

That is just the way it is.

That it has never happened in your family is a poor defense of your dogs. I

It is sort of like the possibilities of a lightning strike. The chances of getting struck in any given year are one in one million if you live in NC During your entire lifetime, one in 15,300 (CDC numbers).

Still only fools stand under tall trees during a thunderstorm.

Having had several pit bulls and beagles (as well as chihuahuas, pyrs, gsds, and countless mutts) in my lifetime, I can honestly say from a personal experience that you have no idea of what you are talking about. Maybe you should gain some experience with that breed before uttering such idiotic statements.

Hmm. Having read the page you referenced in previous post, these statistics on said page stood out:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

“When they attack, pit bulls kill or maul their owners and the owners’ family members or visiting babies more than half the time.”

In the years 2016 through 2021, when pit bulls became homicidal they killed either their owners or members of their owners’ families most of the time. This can be called “eruscide” from the Latin word “erus” which means “owner” or “master of the house.”

In 2016, of the 31 Americans killed by dogs, 23 were killed by pit bulls and their mixes, and 12 of those 23 victims were either the owner of the pit bull or a member of the owner’s family.
(See details given by Colleen Lynn, http://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-statistics-fatalities-2016.php.) The eruscide rate was 52%.

In 2017, of the 39 Americans killed by dogs, 29 were killed by pit bulls and their mixes, and 18 of those 29 victims were either the owner of the pit bull or a member of the owner’s family (including a relative).
(See Colleen Lynn, https://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-statistics-fatalities-2017.php.) The eruscide rate was 62%.

In 2018, of the 34 Americans killed by dogs, 25 were killed by pit bulls and their mixes, and 14 of those 25 victims were their owners, the owners’ family members, or babies that the pit bull owners were watching. (Phillips, Kenneth, Pit Bull Killings - 2018, https://bit.ly/2Wubi1j.) The eruscide rate was 56%.

In 2019, 48 Americans were killed by dogs, pit bulls and their mixes killed 33, and 13 of the 33 victims were their owner or the owner’s family member. In one additional case, the victim was a visiting baby. (Phillips, Kenneth, Pit Bull Killings - 2019, https://bit.ly/2S5zcko.) The eruscide rate was 40%.

In 2021, of the 51 Americans killed by dogs, 37 were killed by one or more pit bulls and their mixes (in some cases in combination with one or more other breeds), and 21 of those victims were either the owner of the pit bull or member of the owner’s family. The eruscide rate was 57%.

The average eruscide rate during the past 5 years, therefore, was 53%.

Pit bulls also have been known to eat their owners.

In 2019, when the police went in search for Freddie Mack (57, Johnson County, TX), they could not find him, but they found bits of his bones and clothes in the excrement of his 15 pit bulls.
(Sheriff: Missing North Texas man was eaten by his own dogs, Fox4News.com, July 10, 2019, https://bit.ly/2YR4BrD.)
In 2017, police looking for Bethany Stephens (22, Goochland County, VA) found her two pit bulls eating her rib cage. (Goochland County Sheriff James Agnew, press conference, Dec. 18, 2017)

In 2022, Marina Verriest’s husband returned home from work to find his wife being eaten by their own pit bull.
(See Colleen Lynn, https://blog.dogsbite.org/2022/07/family-pit-bull-mutilates-kills-70-year-old-woman-in-nassau-county.html.)

Common sense leads to the conclusion that when they attack, pit bulls bite (without necessarily killing) their owners and their owners’ family members and visiting babies in the same relative numbers, namely more than half the time.
