We Were Soldiers
We WereSoldiers is carried by intense action sequences that aim to give credence to the total disarray of the Vietnam War’s first major battle — Ia Drang. The film is based on a book written by then-Lt. Col. Hal Moore (portrayed by Mel Gibson), who, as the commanding officer of 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, earned a Distinguished Service Cross for his actions. Maybe not you were looking for but “Failsafe” got me...and I loved “The Dirty Dozen”...guessing as legit, it would be “Saving Pvt Ryan”
The best war movie ever made in my opinion is “Saving Private Ryan”. My sweet late uncle Herman, who landed in France shortly after D-Day told me that film was very realistic as far as the fighting scenes. Also it is one of the few films that will always make me misty. The scene at the end in the cemetery reminds of my dad, my uncles, and all the dear family friends who are gone now who served in that great endeavor. The flag with the sun shining through reminds me of how much those guys loved this country and what the did to preserve it. Needless to say, I’m glad they aren’t her to see it now.
Lots of great ones listed in the posts above. “In Harms Way” is my favorite John Wayne film. Will watch it whenever I see it is on.
Would suggest you check out “Midway” that came out in 2019. Great war movie and absolutely no wokeness. Also have not seen anyone mention “Dunkirk” which is a great film as well.
Try and find a copy of “The Road Back” it is the companion
to Im Westen nict newes.
The book traces the group who then survive the war and their
struggles with ptsd, the crash of the weimar republic
and the rise of the freicorps. Including the war dog.
My favorites, in no particular order.

About the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment a black outfit.
And The Pacific
The Pacific is based upon two excellent memoirs written by Marines featured in the series, Eugene Sledge's "With The Old Breed" and Robert Leckie's "Helmet for my Pillow".
Those memoirs are even grittier than the films manage to be. You wonder how anyone survived the Pacific War with their minds intact.

Das Boot
Stalingrad (1993)
