If memory serves, the max range to qualify on a 9mm in the USAF is 25 yards and we had 5 shots at it. I know at best, I hit 4 and that was under controlled circumstances where I was not under a ton of stress and I shot expert that day.

8 of 10 under stress at 40 yards is unbelievable!

The topic came up at the range yesterday. Closest we could come to simulate the situation was a 2/3 steel IPSC torso at 50 yards, a bit more challenging but then the target wasn’t shooting back. Carry guns only. It was NOT easy for experienced shooters and only one of five of us got 8 hits out of 10 in the time allotted. This case was simply excellent shooting in a super-intense environment and I don’t think I’d have done as well as that young feller.

My eyes have got wonky in my old age and i don’t see in a straight line at distances longer than a dozen yards or so. Were I armed in that mall I think I would have responded but I would have had to get a lot closer and he carnage would have been a lot more. Thank God for an armed and highly proficient customer with a calm nurse beside him. Don’t forget the girlfriend. She was saving lives, too.

Should make us all proud that as our government and institutions devolve to sh!t our own citizens step up to do what needs to be done. That’s the strength of this country.

The schools in my county and probably all of this part of the state have signs by their doors to the effect that teachers and staff are armed and rained. Florida is done with the GFZ insanity, at least in the northern half.

Same here. I just cannot see as well over a few yards anymore. I would have needed to cut that distance in half. Yes they were heroes. That’s one of the reasons this story got buried.

If someone gets within arm’s reach, his Glock will be useless.

Article says 8 shots.

With more information, it was 10 shots, eight hits.

It is not a mmiracle that Dicken was extensively practiced. His grandfather taught him and practiced him a a lot all while he was growing up. I have seen mention that Dicken may be high functioning autistic and if so that would figure in his quick reactions and accuracy. I have two such children and because of that I know others. They have a capability of concentration that is awesome and if they get into a project they are intense and reach pretty close to perfection. The intense practice itself would have rendered Dicken's reactions fast and automatic. Perhaps his secret name is Kyle like Chris and Rittenhouse.

I don’t think anything was “going through his mind.” His reactions seem to have been automatic. He didn’t have time for thought.

I have to believe a Red Dot was on the weapon.

It really makes aiming with both eyes open easier for me.

I believe that's essential for a shot at this range.

Also, somebody needs to ask where he got his training.

I realize most of the gun guys here know this, but no one is talking about it.

Eli Dickens had a choice. He had to decide whether he would take the risk of shooting at a guy with a long gun at a distance that made a miss possible.

A miss would result in the bad guy with a superior weapon returning fire with a high possibility of death.

There are a lot of keyboard Rambos who, if they were in Eli’s shoes, “Well he had a rifle and I only had my pistol, so I hid.”

Eli is not the only man to take on a killer who was armed with a superior weapon, but he definitely is one of the very few brave enough to go up against superior fire power.

10 shots, 8 hits, and we don’t have any way to discern a magic moment when the perp might have been rendered ineffective. Maybe 1, maybe 8. Eli did well to continue until the threat was known to be stopped.

People are clamoring for video and I’m now glad there isn’t lest the antis go on an armchair fishing expedition to find fault.

I read in another article that Dickens was resting on a “low-slung wall” which I thought would have definitely steadied his aim.

But the video shows no wall, so perhaps not.

Regardless, great shooting!
