Egg Prices Soar As 10% Of Nation’s Hens Wiped Out By Devastating Bird Flu

Food prices are rising across the U.S., but the latest sticker shock at the supermarket is in the eggs and poultry aisles, as the deadly bird flu wreaks havoc on the country’s egg-laying hen flock.

Inflation data tracked by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found a dozen of eggs jumped 23% in April compared with the month before to $2.52. Prices reached levels not seen since early 2016, a period that followed the highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak of 2014-15, which led to a 50% increase in egg prices in the second half of 2015.

Since January, the outbreak has spread to 32 states, killing more than 37 million chickens and turkeys. Of that, 29 million egg-laying hens have died, or about 10% of the U.S.’ total flock of 300 million. Bloomberg says the bird flu is “shaping up to be the worst outbreak of its kind.”

“When the outbreaks first started, the jump in wholesale values was being driven primarily by demand, as there was a bit of panic and short covering going on in the marketplace. But at this point, so much production has been removed from the landscape that it’s more of a supply-side issue,” Karyn Rispoli, an egg market reporter at commodity research firm Urner Barry, told CBS News.

Breakfast has become the most expensive in years. It’s not just eggs, orange juice and wheat prices are also soaring.(They forgot to mention coffee)

Egg prices could be headed higher as there are no indications the avian influenza spread is under control. This is just another sign that food shortages could get much worse in the second half of the year.

Last time I bought jumbo eggs at Walmart they were $1.64 a dozen. I went by the egg display yesterday and those same eggs are now $3.19. I didn't get eggs.

That price jump seems manufactured and intentional. Certainly not warranted by 10% of hens. Everything is deliberate and intentional these days and all BS. I am sick to death of this nonsense destroying our country- there’s no where to go. USA was last and best. Gone now. I hope these a$$hats live long enough to suffer what they wrought and then burn in eternal hedoublehockeysticks

The head of Hickman Farms (huge egg distributor based in Arizona) is a friend of mine. He texted me last month and asked me to pray for all the egg farms around the Country. His is on lockdown so not to get the terrible disease.

The outbreak didn’t kill 37 million chickens and turkeys.

Massive government overreaction killed 37 million chickens and turkeys.

I’ll buy 4 butters at safeway-Land-o lakes-discounted at $3.99/lb. I never buy 4 but this may be smart.

An egg sandwich was really cheap. Braunschweiger has gone up as well. Still fairly cheap.

Eggs and poultry are safe to eat, despite news of avian influenza

So why are they being killed ? Fedzilla kills everything it touches.

None of the chickens in the photo are wearing masks. When will Biden appoint a Chicken Czar to protect our fowl victims? He seems to be an expert in this, and Fauci needs a new audience to frighten.

I vote with your view to this this wholeheartedly.

I grow my own eggs. I have no idea how much they are per dozen, all things considered, food, coops, and the cost of the birds themselves.
I do know where to get my eggs, and it is not at the store. I won’t be looking at empty shelves.

I saw an article today talking about "The Great Resignation" - it said that the turnover in retail and hospitality was in the 6% range - up from 4%. But you see "Hiring" signs at every restaurant. Conclusion - the amount of disruption it takes to cause chaos in a labor market (or any market) is not as large as you would expect it to be.

Wait for the stories about what happens in eternal hedoublehockeysticks when all of the evil doers get there. Satan will have to open the border to let the illegals in just to build new housing in eternal hedoublehockeysticks.

This happened a few weeks ago.

Prices are already back down but not to the levels they were at.

THE HENS WERE NOT 'WIPED OUT' by "bird flu". I was just like the Rona: a bunch of false positives in an unreliable test, except unlike the Rona, these Federal bastards ordered every hen DESTROYED in every house that had a positive 'case'. THEY INTENTIONALLY DESTROYED OUR NATION'S EGG PRODUCTION.

Y'all better go get you some chicks and raise a flock, or get to know somebody who has chickens.

ENGINEERED FAMINE coming.

I can get free range organic fresh eggs for $3/dozen from my co-worker. I give her an empty carton and $ and the next day she gives me a dozen eggs laid the day before. She may raise the price to $4 soon but it’s worth it. The quality is amazing.
